Post X-clamp Fix: Super Loud Fan
« on: October 22, 2009, 06:10:00 AM »

Hello,

I recently completed an X-Clamp fix on my xbox, and it is one of the first generation ones from November 06. I was having both 1) intermittent RRoD and 2) Graphic glitches/crashes. After the X-Clamp fix I'm not longer having either of those problems but my case fans immediately start on their highest power and stay that way which is ridiculously loud; I've left the xbox on and even opened the xbox to see how hot it really is and the heat sinks are unremarkable warm, not hot so I don't understand why my case fans think the DIEs are so hot.

I've disassembled the heatsinks and I know there's good contact between the heat sink and the DIEs and that I have the proper amount of arctic silver (I.e., I don't think the fan glitch is directly related to a heating problem)

Suggestions? Thoughts? Places to buy quiet fans?

Although you do state that there is proper contact between the thermal paste & the heatsink..

I had this problem with a combination of two things, inproper contact & not enough thermal paste. It can probably occur with too much thermal, too.

Hmmm maybe I don't have enough, the problem definitely isn't too much; I applied it into a super fine line but made sure everything was absolutely covered.
