Lite-on Dvd Drive Open Tray/unreadable Disk Error
« on: October 19, 2009, 09:52:00 AM »

I have a unmodded Xbox 360 with a Lite-On DVD Drive.

My Xbox 360 is having trouble reading game discs only. It will play both music cds and movie DVDs (double layered) with no problem at all. It will not recognize that the an original Xbox 360 game disc is in the drive, it'll say "reading...reading...reading" then "open tray".  And when I manage to have the game start up, shortly thereafter I get the "disc is unreadable" error message.

My Xbox is out of warranty and I have tried the following:
-I have cleaned the laser with a Q-tip and alcohol.
-I have adjusted the DVD potentiometer from the stock 5.47 reading  (at 20 k Ohm setting)and attempted to play game discs at 4.63, 4.09, 3.53 and 3.16.

The cleaning and adjustments did not seem to help the problem at all. I am still unable to read game discs but can still read music cds and movie DVDs.

I've seen fixes which use a rubber band or tape that act as a spacer for the laser arm. Also I've seen fixes which including cleaning and greasing the drive motor and arms. I have not done these yet.

I don't want to replace the lite-on drive, I think it would involve soldering to swap out the PCB board or flashing the new board. I have no experience doing either. Does anyboy have any suggestions on how to fix this problem? I appreciate any help you can offer.

Swapping is really easy, just read the key out of your liteon, and write it to your new drive wink.gif

yeah, ive been having close to the exact same problem. I put a game in and it reads for a while and comes up as either, open tray, play dvd, or play game. If the picture comes up with the "play game" text, it will work. If the picture doesnt come up and it says "play game" and i boot it up. It will instantly say disc unreadable. If it says "play dvd" and i launch it, it goes to the xbox 360 screen and stays there. In any condition besides it working i have to open and close the tray like 10 times for the game to work.

Yes my drive is flashed with firmware 1.6. (could the firmware be a little wrong and causing this?)

If ANYONE knows anything that might fix this, any suggestion would be appriciated.

I tried cleaning the laser. Tried reflashing the drive. Nothing works.

Pleaes help, thanks.

Try to replace the rubber tray belt. This could cause "open tray" issue. Also it might be the metalic magnet that is on the top cover of your drive. This cause the DVD to sit incorectly in your drive and the laser can't read right the DVD info. If these are checked and done as I said, then the other option is a new drive and swapping the controller boards.

I am having the exact same problem with a benq original fw.  I did a window mod, had a little trouble getting the magnet the right height, but eventually got it.

The is the part i dont understand.  When i put in an older game, the game will spin up and play fine.  But when i put in a wave 5, such as cod 6, it wont play it.  open tray after trying to read.  and its even installed on the hdd, it cant read it for 5 seconds  grr.gif  while older games play fine.  thought it might be laser going bad, or the motor wasnt spinning it up fast enough, but why does it play the other games then?

and even after i put the original lid back on it, still having these probs, so its not the magnet

well when it can play movies and music...that means there is no key for it to decrypt a game...for play..
you bought it like that off a secondhand place?

well first Call of Duty 6 Modern Warfare 2 is wave 4... so it needs 1.61 or 1.60 (needs activation disk)
or just a Hitachi 1.51 <we can rule that out... maybe something wrong with that orig fw...spoofed or not the orig...check it in jungle flasher...
