Microsoft has clarified that the 250GB Xbox 360 hard drive, which was unveiled as part of the Modern Warfare 2 console bundle earlier today, will not be sold on its own.

"This hard drive is not being sold separately," said Larry Hryb, boss of Xbox Live, during a short video with Kotaku.

Ummmm,

Anyone with common sense would soon realise that the only reason Microsoft is saying this is to 1) Get people that want a 250GB HDD to get this console. 2) and to get rid of the 120GB HDD's they have sitting in retail.
If people know the 250GB is coming out soon, they're gonna hold off/skip buying a 120GB.

Just wait until November/sooner, someone will dump the security sector & we will all praise them for it (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

so is it "safe" to use someone elses ss.bin or what? I always figured it wasnt..so Im stuck w/ my original 20GB harddrive...

Is it "as safe" as flashed drives? Safer? less safe? On a scale of YAY to OH CRAP.... what is it?

I know that the 360's security is pretty tight, but Microsoft being able to read the SS.bin from the drive every time you switch on your console is a bit much.
Plus, it would probably infringe/breach some privacy laws & land them in deep trouble if anyone found out - it's just not worth the risk for them.

Who cares! This means less microsux points and DLC I have to buy from them.  You dont really own the stuff you download and pay for anyway. Way I see it, they should be giving these things away.

Which 250GB HD would be compatible with the 360?

Call me Nostradamus, but I don't think we'll know which drives will work until the new system is actually released, and someone like TheSpecialist (right?) shows us what to do.

From a business standpoint, it makes sense. Have hardcore 360 owners double dip and get the bundle, then sell theirs to someone else. It's just another way to expand the market.

HAHA are you joking,  if they want to ban they will, not because of privacy laws.  using a SS.bin from the internet is illegal and if they want they can ban.

Didn't they say the same thing about the 120GB HDD for the elite, the 60GB HDD also.  Hell I remember when the elite was announced it was said to be "for a limited time."

Just wait to buy one when they come out, or make one yourself for 50 bucks. I am no where near filling up my 120GB, so I'm not concerned.

Agree on the not wanting to stop the 120gig stocks from selling.

I suspect it's more that they don't really care, from a podcast I listened to when the 120 gig drive came out Major Nelson (Larry) said that if you want to bring your own drive and void the warranty on your hard drive not to mention the effort it takes to make the drive work on the 360 they won't stop you or for $50 more then what it costs for the same sized laptop drive you can but the genuine 120gig drive.
They could stick you if they wanted to but where's the harm in what you're doing to their platform, at most you're depriving of them of the mark up they put on the hdd plus the caddy with the hotswap sata connection.

You lose a little though too, that caddy, you opened to stick your own brandX drive in, you've imediately voided the warranty on the 360 HDD, and if they wanted to be b@stards about it, if the console ever had 3RLoD they could say you contributed to it by messing with the HDD.  You could call bullsh!t on that but what could you do really? I don't think your supposed to send in your HDD. I need the model of the drive ASAP....I want to have this thing ready to go when someone dumps it. I wish things like that were leaked like the new xbox models...jasper etc.

Dude, no one can leak the model of the drive without seeing it.  I guarantee you we won't see the model until the day or a few days after the system is released.  You will not see this anytime before that, just sit tight and wait.

QUOTE(Zod5000 @ Sep 17 2009, 05:09 AM) *

I bought a 120gb on a boxing day sale, but it means my original 20gb is doing nothing.  I wouldn't mind trying swap out the drive and ss.bin and try to make my own 250gb drive.

I wonder if I'd be able to use my hard drive upgrade kit to copy the contents over to the 250gb.

That would probably work very nicely, so long as your xbox remained the same you wouldn't have to even redownload your xblive downloads afterward.  I bought a 60gig 360 because I needed the HDMI port for my new AV setup and I borrowed a friends HDD transfer kit, worked perfectly.  Because I was changing xboxes in the process I did have to kind of download the stuff again (all it did was redownload the license to use it), after I used the xblive license transfer ap online.
