Is It Necessary To Screw The 360 Motherboard Into The Metal Case?
« on: September 09, 2009, 05:24:00 PM »

I've lost the screws that clamp the Xbox 360 motherboard to the metal case. Is it necessary to have them, to prevent the board from flexing and causing RROD?

I have a friend who doesn't screw the board to the metal case, and he says he never has a problem after he fixes the xbox's.  I personally tried both and still having issues, but putting the screws directly on the board and into the heatsinks is definitely easier than drilling into the metal case.

I wouldn't bother with the X-clamps anymore if you can help it, but that's just my opinion (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Very much yes, in my opnion. I've lost count of the number of repaired RROD units that I've had to repair that haven't been screwed to the case in the centre. When the xbox mobo heats up, it warps upwards, so if it isn't secured in the centre, it'll bend into a convex shape.

But then I do the HYBRID fix, part of which is to properly stabilise the motherboard, drilling the case for m5 machine screws and sanding down the two standoffs to make them level with the rest of the case, and reusing the x-clamps. I have a shortage of x-clamps coz so many people throw them away.... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif)
