Disc Drive Replacement
« on: September 07, 2009, 10:30:00 AM »

About last month ago, I fixed my Xbox 360's 3RRL and totally forgot about the Disc Drive situation. I have to eject and close the tray about 10 times just to get it to say "Play Game" instead of "Play DvD."

I'm assuming that I have to totally replace the drive, but how hard is this. I've checked the stickies and do I really have to flash/other stuff, seems to complicated, although I haven't read it yet.

What kind of drive do you have?  Some are easier then others to replace.

Good question. :\ Not sure to be honest, but if this helps, it's one of the very first Xbox 360's that got released. Think I got it in December of 2006. I'm going to have to open it up again.

You can just eject the drive to see what kind it is, as each have a different tray.

Here's something that will help you ID your xbox's drive...

And no, you can't just swap drives around. You'll need to extract the key from the existing drive and inject it into the new drive. You'll need some hardware to do this, like the xecuter ck3 kit, and some software like jungle flasher. If you aren't confident about this, get someone to do it for you.

Looks like I have the Hitachi GDR-3120L. What does that mean? I've watched a video where the guy just switches the circuit boards, will that be possible or will I have to do some flashing, etc?

Of course it will work if you get another Hitachi. Just swap their boards, and you will need no flashing etc.

He can swap the board if he gets another hitachi, nothing extra is needed. I would say just buy a hitachi, and switch the pcb, and your good to go.
