Elite 360 Fan Issue
« on: August 31, 2009, 04:43:00 PM »

After about 10 seconds of my 360 booting up the fans go into overdrive and are running what I consider to be faster and louder than they ever have. Even sitting on the dashboard they are this loud. Any ideas how to cure this? Or will I just have to live with it?

I have also noticed that my play n charge kits no longer charge the controllers up either. Could this be related?

seems like your 360 is overheating and it will probably get an error soon.

Is there anything I could do to stop this error coming?
do you know what the error will be?

FYI: The air that is getting pushed out of the rear by the fans is stone cold though. Even after 30 minutes of use

If the air is cold, it's overheating since it's not releasing the hot air. My guess is that the heatsinks are not making proper contact with the GPU and/or CPU.

I'm agree with Wilson_93. You should take action ASAP before BGA connection break up.

This might sound a bit silly but if this was overheating and only cold air is coming out where is the heat about and if it is overheating how long would it run before it shut down. I have had it sitting on the dashboard for over 1 hour with no apparent problems (red lights etc).

I know that just sitting on the dashboard is not really using any processing power but the fans are running well in excess of their norm (The system used to be virtually silent up until this week) and a lot louder than I have ever heard it before

If it is overheating would it be worth my while getting the XBOX 360 RROD Pro Repair Kit From Team Xecuter or just wait until i get the 3rl (or any other combination) and call Micro$oft

You might not get the RROD(three red lights). Your most likely gonna get 2 red lights(overheating). Also, that kit you mentioned, XBOX 360 RROD Pro Repair Kit probably will not fix your problem but its worth trying.

That happened to my elite. The fan speeds up right away and eventually I got the 2 red light error. I also tried the x clamp fix on this and it still eventually got the 2 red lights again.

I got an error code 0013(Ram chips overheating).

1-Check what error code you have if you get 2 red lights eventually.

2-So I removed the old thermal compound first. Try not to bend x clamps to much cause your gonna re use them.

3-Heated gunned all 8 ram chips for 1-2 minutes or so, let cool for 1/2 hour or more.

4-Replaced thermal compound with ARCTIC COOLING MX-2 Thermal Compound.

5-Put x clamps back on(no need for x clamp fix since error code is ram chips). This is kinda hard to do so be careful you dont scratch the mobo.

6-I also put thermal compound on ram chips under gpu with 2 washers(side by side) on each ram chip(total of 4 washers).

7-Removed 4 thermal pads under mobo on 4 ram chips, placed 1 penny on each and placed thermal pads back down on top of penny. I also applied thermal compound to all ram chips before placing one penny on them.

8-Last 2 ram chips on top of mobo, placed a penny on each with thermal compound as well. Then stuck thermal pads on those as well. You can place heatsinks on them instead of pennies but I didnt have any.

Its been working good so far. Fan does not speed up any more and no 2 red light's.

Did not do a 12 volt fan mod cause wasnt necessary but it wouldnt hurt to do that too. Maybe just for the gpu side of fan(red wire to 12 volt source) since thats where 2 ram chips are that are most likely causing the problem.

This probably will not last forever but had to try something.

I agree with you mate. The problem is the RAM chips and only. The washers and penny trick are novice tricks and I suggest RAM cooling heatsinks instead, for more professional and long lasting solution. Otherwise your solution is what someone should do (maybe could apply x-clamp fix, just in case, but only if you know what you are doing, otherwise you might get it worse).

Many thanks turfster and MadMaxGR for your replies

I have ordered the Team Xecuter Heat Pads. Hopefully they will do the trick. I have taken the liberty of ordering enough to do all 8 ram chips instead of just the 4 on the bottom. I have ordered an xclamp kits as well but will see how the heat pads perform before going any further.

Do I have to heat the ram chips up with a heatgun first or can I just stick the heat pads on?

Just use the heat pads first. If it works fine, then no need to do any heatgunning. If not, then you know the hard way to fix it (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Hi,

Got the heat pads today and stuck them on the 4 bottom ram chips and the 2 top ones.

Bad news, switched it on and the fans are still running at full pelt on the dashboard?

Do I have to run it for a bit for them to bed in or will I have to try the xclamp thing next? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/uhh.gif)

O wo is me. Got the 2 red rings  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

Took the cpu n gpu heatsink off cleaned up the silicon heat transfer compound and put new stuff on. Still no good. Took the pads off again and still no good.

What I will say is that the fans run a lot quieter now  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Any ideas

OK. so yous till have 2 red rings? In this case just make the x-clamp fix man. If you took off the MS x-clamps , you might have bend them in a way that don't keep the heatsinks in place. Also use Arctic Silver 5 or MX2, not any other compound. trust me, I used lots and I allways retutn to Arctic Silver 5, they are the best perfomance for their value.
