You might not get the RROD(three red lights). Your most likely gonna get 2 red lights(overheating). Also, that kit you mentioned, XBOX 360 RROD Pro Repair Kit probably will not fix your problem but its worth trying.
That happened to my elite. The fan speeds up right away and eventually I got the 2 red light error. I also tried the x clamp fix on this and it still eventually got the 2 red lights again.
I got an error code 0013(Ram chips overheating).
1-Check what error code you have if you get 2 red lights eventually.
2-So I removed the old thermal compound first. Try not to bend x clamps to much cause your gonna re use them.
3-Heated gunned all 8 ram chips for 1-2 minutes or so, let cool for 1/2 hour or more.
4-Replaced thermal compound with ARCTIC COOLING MX-2 Thermal Compound.
5-Put x clamps back on(no need for x clamp fix since error code is ram chips). This is kinda hard to do so be careful you dont scratch the mobo.
6-I also put thermal compound on ram chips under gpu with 2 washers(side by side) on each ram chip(total of 4 washers).
7-Removed 4 thermal pads under mobo on 4 ram chips, placed 1 penny on each and placed thermal pads back down on top of penny. I also applied thermal compound to all ram chips before placing one penny on them.
8-Last 2 ram chips on top of mobo, placed a penny on each with thermal compound as well. Then stuck thermal pads on those as well. You can place heatsinks on them instead of pennies but I didnt have any.
Its been working good so far. Fan does not speed up any more and no 2 red light's.
Did not do a 12 volt fan mod cause wasnt necessary but it wouldnt hurt to do that too. Maybe just for the gpu side of fan(red wire to 12 volt source) since thats where 2 ram chips are that are most likely causing the problem.
This probably will not last forever but had to try something.
