Preventive Maintenance?
« on: August 20, 2009, 01:41:00 AM »

Well, I've had my 360 replaced three times already.  I've already done x-clamp replacements before using RBJtech's method on quite a few 360s with RRODs from eBay, so I'm very familiar with this process.

I was wondering if I should attempt to swap the x-clamps out now before there is a sign of RROD or E74.

I'll do additional cooling mods as well.  I'm just wondering if it's wise to swap these x-clamps out now, and if anyone on here has already done so on a non-3 ROL 360.

I did it on one and it works fine. But, I was very carefull not to cause and mainboard bending. It is very important to keep the mainboard flat. Also put the extra heatsinks or thermal pads on the memories. Additionally I put an AKASA heatsink on the Southbridge too and did the shroud fix (extent the tube). The only thing I didn't do was the 12V Fan mod because I hate the noise.

Could you explain more what model # did you use for the AKASA heatsink?

Also, have you heard about the XSPC waterblock heat sink for the Xbox 360?

If you are still under warranty I wouldn't recommend it or if you have a new jasper. If it's out of warranty then maybe, but I'd wait until it RROD before doing anything.

Like the old saying, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

I'm already out of warranty.  I was one of the first adopters of the Xbox 360 and bought it back in December 2005.

I apologise, I used akasa heatsinks for the memory chips and the ZALMAN ZM-NB32K for the chipset.

I never heard the waterblock you are mentioning.

I asked the same question in 2007. I am glad I did the Preventative Maintenance. As for the guy who says:

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it." Not sure if you saw the 360 failure rate percentage but the 360 will eventually be broke and you'll then be broke after getting a new one.

I did the repair in August 2007 and my console is still running fine 2 years later. I replaced my Whisper Fans (which are annoying as well) with the stock fans and my 360 is quieter. I also do a clean every so often to blow out dust and make sure to replace the black tape used to seal the opening between the shrouding and the fans and the heatsinks.

I love my 360 more because of the fact that I saved it from a life of doom.
