Tighten the bolts on the x-clamp fix & replace the thermal compound!

I had the same problem after a month as well!!

I solved it by LOOSENING the screws on the gpu heatsink. Make sure it is not too loose though. As long as it is not shaky it should be fine.

However I'm not sure if it is the tightness of the screws causing the problem as another thing I did was to remove the rubber washers i used under the board, as the screws I used has a head too thick and I figured it caused the freezes as the motherboard was bent.

So do reply and tell me which one fixed the problem. =)

So is it still freezing?

For the second step I used rubber instead of metal washers. The main idea is to ensure that the motherboard does not bend when placed into the metal case. One way to check this is to see whether all the ports fit into the openings of the metal casing without the screws of the motherboard on.

Hi Guys

just my way of fixing the 3 red lights error using different methods.

Used two methods and the first one didnt really help but was a try.
The first was to re-apply the thermal grease to the GPU and CPU as that seemed to be the common fault.

During this fix i done the RBJTECH FAN Shroud fix/mod...  http://www.rbjtech.net/xbox/cooling/cooling.htm
This allows better airflow over the components heatsinks.

After the mod and grease application, i have read that on initial startup, you will receive the same error , but you will need to wait for the thermal grease to bond, etc. So 5 mins later i switched of and waited for 2 mins...started up again and it worked pefect.....but not for long.

two days later fault appeared again. and didnt allow me to get past the startup screen.

I read the Kiderboots penny fix....  http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=606431
which shed more light on the issue.
In South Africa we dont have pennies so i used 5 cent pieces which are about 1.5 mm thick.

My 2006-11 model unit has the thermal memory pads x 4 which are stuck on the memory chips underneath the board. they are supposed to apply pressure from below the board to hold up the chips which seem to de-solder themselves when hot and over time.....
By sticking the coins (1 each) on the pads directly and then closing up the box...which needed a slight bit of pressure as the screws are slighly shorter to screw in, i was able to fit all screws back in.
the GPU and CPU screws where screwed in but not tightly...just enough to hold the heatsinks firmly...and screw each one in a cross pattern so that they get the same pressure from each corner evenly.
Once all put together, i booted up, waited a few minutes for the chips to resolder themselves back...5 mins..then swithced off for about 2-3 mins and back on again.....It worked perfectly...

Got about 16 hours of game and movie time off the Xbox360 without any issues this weekend. this was done without any issues and errors.

Hope this helps in the fix.

cheers
