Noob (to Site) Question: How Long X Clamps Work?
« on: June 24, 2009, 11:48:00 AM »

Does any one have any idea how long the X clamp fix lasts? I only had the "sound no picture problem" so was advised to do the RROD fix before it happened. All good for now but not sure how long they last.
Also what internal fan is best I have extenal fan installed already.

If no other heat problems exist it will work sometimes for a month or more. The problem is by the time you have to fix the rrod usually its caused issues with solder connections. If the box hasn't overheated the system board to much it'll run till it burns up the heatsink compound. This is why after warranty repair the boxes last a while but eventually go belly up again.  The talismoon fans are very good and will extend its life alot. Some people just modify connections and get the stock fan to run faster by applying a higher voltage.

You need to reflow BGA for GPU and ANA or HANA chip.
Top and bottom side. Then bottom side of AV connector. Try to work with rework station.
Temp should not exceed 410 and air flow not more then 20. Don't thuch any thing when hot. SMD are very small and very easy to go off when hot.

If you are using heat gun, take care of surrounding capacitors.

Cheers for the info, but just found out how long they last. ABOUT 2 HOURS.  Now I have the RROD.
Gonna try the fix again, If its still broke gonna curse (IMG:style_emoticons/default/grr.gif) Micro$haft & ask Bill Gates for some of that money he`s so kindly giving away.

Do you not think it's easier to post him a link to the Hybrid fix, something he may possibly understand?

Have a look at this mate, see what you think, anything you are not sure about give us a nudge.

http://xbox-experts.com/e/tutorial.php?n=hybrid

The real secret to keeping it running is the heatgunning. It doesn't last forever, but as long as you are prepared to strip it down and give the machine a once over every 6 months (ish) then its great.

Funnily enough got the start of an E74 error on mine last night, re-done it again today and all is well. Think its the third time now i've have repaired this particular machine.

As noted the fix for a box which keeps failing shortly after being fixed has solder joint issues and needs to be heat gunned for a lasting fix. We all come to this conclusion after applying compound on the heatsinks , being sure their installed ok so there's no way its an overheat problem with these chips. There's only 1 choice left and unless you like taking this box apart every few days, its  the heatgun fix.
