Rumor: Xbox 360 to get motion-sensing add-on with full body game control?

Here's a wild one. We just got a tip from someone who purports to be in the know on Microsoft's efforts to beat the Wii at its own motion-sensing game, with some of the details lining up with what we were hearing last year along these lines. The word is that Microsoft is building a "sensor bar" of sorts, but instead of detecting the waggles of Wiimote-like controllers, it detects full body movement and sound, sans controllers. There are two sensors on the bar, along with a mic and a camera, and while our tipster has "no idea" how it actually works, it sounds pretty impressive. Here's a quick rundown of capabilities mentioned:

    * Full body and hand gesture control of games / characters.
    * In fighting games you kick, punch, duck, dive, jump and so forth with your body.
    * It also picks up small hand gestures like pinching, grabbing and scrolling.
    * There will also be video conferencing and games with video.
    * Trivia game over the internet with live images of each person playing. When a question pops up, they can clap to buzz in.
    * You can "move objects on your screen" and the other party can see what you're doing in real time.
    * Sensor detects only the person playing, not folks observing on the couch.

I  guess it's plausible...figure a stereoscopic camera system.

It'll never fly though, in order to do it for mass market, there's gonna have to be a bunch of crazy rules setting it up...no furniture, no flesh colored wallpaper, basically have to eliminate anything that might confuse the cameras.

Though even with pretty "aggressive" software, the gestures thing seems farfetched.

if this is true, all MS has to do is look at history. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ql-UZv3AS-E <-- failure. the 360 doesn't need any addons. it'll be fine until the next iteration of the xbox.

it's not fake.
The technology comes from an israeli company called 3DV.

according to many reviews and articles and them being a finalist on "Best of CES 2008", that camera does work and seems like it would beat the crap out of the Wii and the PS3 "like Wii"  controller.

check out the website and some of the press info there:.

I would gladly try this out if it ever became a reality. As someone else mentioned though, it's not the actual gadget that decides if this will be a success or not, it the games that supports it.

It's more than plausible.  Just about any technology is out there it's just a matter of if they can profit.

The technology is out there but whether or not it get's made is up to how much microsoft can profit.

I personally don't want to see all video games go in the direction of the wii.  I like having that option, but if ALL system were motion controlled I think a large part of gaming would die.  The wii is fun and great for social gaming, but the xbox 360 controller with no motion is designed for certain games.

I love playing Tiger Woods on the wii and doing the golf swing motion.  But I HATE playing football games....
I love the way gta iv and call of duty games play with a certain controller type.  They would just never work on a motion set up.

The success of the wii isn't due to motion play alone.  A huge part of it was due microsoft hardware failure's and an even bigger part was due to it's lower price tag.  PS3 should be the king because it guessed right on bluray, but honestly I think the fact that you can't play burnt games on it turns away alot of people.  Not to mention the xbox 360 simply has a superior game selection.

If anything I bet this would be release with the next generation of console.  It does feel like it's about time to start hearing rumors of the "xbox 720".

Yeah, Darth Vader pretty much sums up my opinion of this stuff.

Add-ons usually fail for numerous reasons, but this isn't an add-on they're talking about; just a periph. Sounds very like the camera games they started doing with the PS2 that never really took off (usually due to never being something that most GAMERS were interested in).

They need to figure out a way to incorporate a motion-sensing control system in a way that your average gamer (and dev) will want to adopt into their current favorite games; ie: if I'm a FPS junkie, then I'd want to see the camera work in a way that makes me want to play a FPS game even more with a the add-on, but if I'd still rather play CoD, then you failed to win me, and any gamers like me, over.
