Xbox 360 Oven Method
« on: March 29, 2013, 05:00:00 PM »

Here's my story:

- Got RROD
- Installed "Hybrid eXtreme Uniclamp" (web search for this)
...it worked for about 18 months

- Got E74
- Baked my xbox360 motherboard in my oven at 170 degrees F. for six hours
(no tinfoil*, using 4 crumpled baking parchment paper balls for support).
- Installed heat sinks on the Hana and Southbridge chips.
- Upgraded cpu and gpu heat sinks to the newest versions from Microsoft.
- Re-tightened the "Hybrid eXtreme Uniclamp" bolts using a screwdriver bit in a ratchet
(i.e. much tighter than achievable with a screwdriver)
- It works again!

Good luck.  Ymmv.

* I've baked many foods in my oven encased in tinfoil, which always works fine.  Tinfoil is not an insulator - it's a conductor...so please don't try to use it to protect anything on your motherboard - it won't work.  Besides, 170 degrees F is well within the tolerances of the capacitors, etc...

Oven is useful only when there is mainboard warping, not for reflowing.... Home over at 90C simulates a professional IR oven for electronics.
When you want to fix your GPU issues, a proper reflowing or reballing with the proper equipment is the best way to go. All the rest is rubbish actually.

E74 is very rarely repairable properly as its a failing GPU (EDRAM), They will fail again 99% of the time.

This is how to do it properly, Ovens and heat guns, PAH!!!

Nah, theres no point in desoldering ALL the parts with plastic, the buttom melting incident I had was just once, when I rushed it and didnt cover it properly. At least I only had to desolder some new buttons and resolder.not the whole lot LOL.

Never had any caps leak or bulge, I always make sure they are covered.

What i did was,

1. Wrapped in alot of clothes and taped up
2. Tin foil lots of layers
3. Bluetack for buttons and to seal the tin foil

Gas Mark 9, Preheated for 30mins
Timed 5mins, Opened oven door and let cool for 30mins

Pluged in WORKS!
And running extremely cool.

Hey,

Sorry for ressurecting an old topic. Signed up just to say thanks. Fixed Xbox 360 RROD with this guide.

What i did was;

Stripped down xbox m/b, wrapped in towels leaving gpu&cpu exposed. cable tied these securely, then wrapped in tinfoil, didnt use blue tac..

First i tried for 5minutes then a break then 5 minutes - worked for 30minutes or so then RROD again.

Then i tried for 15minutes straight, though it came out smoking (just the towels i think) its been working ever since!!.

I also upgraded the cooling by installing a laptop CPU fan blowing air through the gpu heatsink into the fans that pull it out, cut one positive of fan (closest to GPU) & wired it directly to 12v of dvd-rom drive & replaced xclamps with bolts and thermal paste to arctic silver 5 - bit louder when running but hopefully all preventitive measures so it doesnt happen again.

The xbox 360 runs extremely cool now. There is nowhere you can touch on the case or even the exhaust point where you will even feel slight warmth. Games are heaps faster, no lag.

It's probably somewhat risky doing this, but it's paid off.

THANKS!!! biggrin.gif appreciate the guide and pics, couldn't have done it without em. Cheers  smile.gif  smile.gif
