The "Official" X-clamp Replacement Thread

So my JTAG has just RROD'd on me after only owning it for a month and running one game for a total of maybe two hours. The seller has conveniently vanished from the face of the earth.

Getting an error code of 0102 ( Error E18 ), and after a quick search found this means GPU / CPU / RAM failure of some sort. So today I opened the 360 and saw that the previous owner had already performed the standard X-Clamp fix, and seems to have done quite a good job of it.

My first move was to replace the thermal paste with some arctic silver. I then replaced the heatsinks and overheated the GPU (whilst providing cooling to the CPU, to keep the system running). I've done this successfully many times, but this time no improvement.

Not sure how to proceed...

Got an odd problem with my machine that I did the xclamp fix on today. I used the team xectuter pro kit and everything went ok. I got green lights when I started the machine up - but initially the fans were racing after a few minutes.

I took it apart while the machine was still hot and was able to just nip the screws up a little more, no doubt due to them expanding with the heat.

I've put it back together again and it seems to be ok, but the fans definitely sound different now. They seem to speed up and slow down (not by very much) but before the fix they seemed constant - and fairly quiet.

I'm puzzled because surely the green lights means that the heatsinks are doing their job of pushing down the gpu and cpu to the board again, so I'm not sure why the fans seem louder than before as the heatsinks must be making good contact. The only thing different, is that I had the old style heatsink on my GPU, but have swapped it out for one of the ones with the extension that came in later models. It was cleaned well and had no marks on it etc.

As I say it isn't too bad, and they certainly aren't racing away. But I'm concerned that it means my machine is getting hotter than it was before. And of course, the heat has already caused me a RROD. Any advice? Cheers.

i would like to thow in my 2 cents and say i use 24 5mm washers...and 16 5 mm o rings and works without a hitch. put 3 washers and a o ring under the board...than a o-ring inbetween the board and heatsinks. i read another tut that said using a o-ring and a washer..this just caused red ringging of the console again. now i just have to find out whats wrong fixing mine..stupid rf/power module  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/grr.gif)

Assessment and Recommendations Regarding G.P.U. loss of contact integrity.

First of all Putting screws /washers in as a replacement for the x clamp ( FIX IT YOUR SELF KIT)
will accomplish two things. Around 90% of units will be working ,even if you don't intentionality over heat
the G.P.U. this is due to the fact you are simply compressing the G.P.U. to reestablish
the open connections. Now the second thing that's occurring is the board is becoming concave
due to the excess pressure that is being applied by G.P.U. vie heat-sink.With the addition of
heat the P.C. board will start to retain this distortion . And you can expect with in 3-6 months a
repeat failure , and dimensioning returns on repeat x clamp mods attempts.

The X clamp does preform a vital function . It Reduces board distortion but only
over a a very small area. So given time 1-3 years some times less the board will bow away from the
clamp causing the G.P.U. to Go high center .

A box that has red ringed or no picture ,Lock up freezing.
and has not been tempered with  could greatly benefit from the installation of specialized hardware
which Can be made to run 2-3 years since that's the average life of the G.P.U. provided it's connected.

Rubber pad under your G.P.U. and cutting up credit card to use as G.P.U. top support just won't
Quite do-it , but creative never the less.

The box needs specialized hardware ,that will compress the G.P.U. with a 100 times more force than
the X clamp  could imparts to the P.C. board and evenly distributed over the bottom surface
G.P.U.vie the P.C. board. whale preserving the flatness of the board We have designs and tested this Hardware for up grading the current
mounting system for the 360 , However we also re-flow the G.P.U before
and we install G.P.U. hardware for an add measure of protection.
kits will be available soon 3-20-10

Hello, have a problem with one of my 360's rroding, its out of warranty so i bought a x clamp kit and followed instructions. after overheating it and letting it cool down it stills gives 3 red lights, i adjusted the screws incase its too tight and get the same results. I get the green light for 40 odd seconds then 3 red lights, i also tried starting it with no HDMI cable connected and it does the same thing ? (doesn't give 4 red lights) is it completely buggered or do i need to keep adjusting it ?

Cheers !

Fegg - i have one like that. so i checked the secondary code. 0002. from what i understand, many xboxs that have 3rrod with 0002 cant be fixed. but im looking at things to try before i throw it out.. like replacing some MOSFETS.

so my advise - check the secondary error code. look it up, and weigh your options. also, ive had good luck with using a heatgun.

The secondary error code was 0022 or E10, probably a broken trace somewhere. I'll have a closer look at it over the weekend and if i still can't get it going then i'll keep it for spares for my Elite.

Well its just the console but he said he used a friends power supply to make sure it powered on. It did but he couldnt recall what error it was giving. ....

It did but he couldnt anamnesis what absurdity it was giving. able-bodied today I just went advanced and did the x catch backup fix. I accept congenital a few computers and with all the tutorials I am appealing abiding I did a acceptable job. able-bodied actuality is my botheration. I do not accept a ability accumulation to accomplishment the fix. I cannot over calefaction it and accomplishment the tutorial. I accept not anchored the screws down all the way yet, just abundant to sit able-bodied on the lath. I went advanced and bought a ability accumulation from ebay but I will not accept that for at atomic a anniversary. Am i traveling to accept to re administer the thermal admixture now afterwards all this time? Its no big accord if I accept to I just should accept apprehend all the way advanced afore I approved the fix. Any suggestions would advice. acknowledgment a agglomeration
