Bennos - the 2 red lights is over-heating of the console. Try cleaning it out for dust blocking vents etc and dont sit it in an  enclosed space. As for the memory chips, you can get Thermal conductive pads to put on them to aid cooling them.

Truechampion - If you have tightened the screws fully try loosing them half a turn each, tightening them fully can apply to much pressure and resluts in secondary errors like you are experiencing. Never had that exact error code but hopefully that will help you.

Good luck

Assessment and Recommendations Regarding G.P.U. loss of contact integrity.

First of all Putting screws /washers in as a replacement for the x clamp ( FIX IT YOUR SELF KIT)
will accomplish two things. Around 90% of units will be working ,even if you don't intentionality over heat
the G.P.U. this is due to the fact you are simply compressing the G.P.U. to reestablish
the open connections. Now the second thing that's occurring is the board is becoming concave
due to the excess pressure that is being applied by G.P.U. vie heat-sink.With the addition of
heat the P.C. board will start to retain this distortion . And you can expect with in 3-6 months a
repeat failure , and dimensioning returns on repeat x clamp mods attempts.

The X clamp does preform a vital function . It Reduces board distortion but only
over a a very small area. So given time 1-3 years some times less the board will bow away from the
clamp causing the G.P.U. to Go high center .

A box that has red ringed or no picture ,Lock up freezing.
and has not been tempered with  could greatly benefit from the installation of specialized hardware
which Can be made to run 2-3 years since that's the average life of the G.P.U. provided it's connected.

Rubber pad under your G.P.U. and cutting up credit card to use as G.P.U. top support just won't
Quite do-it , but creative never the less.

The box needs specialized hardware ,that will compress the G.P.U. with a 100 times more force than
the X clamp  could imparts to the P.C. board and evenly distributed over the bottom surface
G.P.U.vie the P.C. board. whale preserving the flatness of the board We have designs and tested this Hardware for up grading the current
mounting system for the 360 , However we also re-flow the G.P.U before
and we install G.P.U. hardware for an add measure of protection.
kits will be available soon 3-20-10

Ive been trawling through this excellent site a while now trying to find an answer to a problem i have with no joy.i apologise in advance if im asking in the wrong place or asking a question thats been asked a hundred times before...but here goes.
ive been fixing rrod xboxes a while now often using xclamp removal and bolt kits with very good results but tonight i have come across a second console that after the clamp fix the fans run at full speed,as if theres no thermostatic control.ive put the meter on them and they rising to 12vdc within a few seconds of powering up.the console certainly isnt overheating, heatsinks dont even get a chance to get warm before fan spins up and can be left on for hours without 2 rrod appearing....any ideas?...thanks in advance...paul

Any suggestions to this as i have a 360 with the exact same behaviour. Have repaired several consoles but one of them is acting exactly like this. Heatsinks not very warm but fans go at full speed after a few seconds. However, it never seems to overheat.

Hi TehGodPwner

1 out of 100 units will have the C.P.U. fail due to broken connections.
This is mainly because the C.P.U.  doesn't get nearly as hot as
the G.P.U. and the heat sink for the C.P.U  has a copper transfer plate
and about 10x the surface area as the G.P.U. .so its able to effectively
dump the excess heat keeping the Die from over heating and distorting the P.C. board.
So a Conformal Compression Assembly is not needed for this chip.

That's the long answer

the short one, is

It doesn't need one.

DARN BOX KEEPS OVER HEATING

There are three reasons why your box goes in to thermail shut down 2 reds
I'll start with the most common and work down.

1  The heat sink is askew / not flush with the chips die. For G.P.U  C.P.U.              ( level the load so your flush)

2  The heat sink compound has thin-out to the point where it has lost a solid thermal seal. ( reapplie compound)

3  The Thermal couple (PIN diode) located inside the chip has lost contact with the main board. ( re-flow chips)
this can happen with either chip  , but it's far more common with the G.P.U.

4  The Thermal diode has gone out of tolerance (very rare)            (  re-flow chip still quick over heat)
(IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) feel sad then strip for parts
well that's it

I have fixed boxes with the traditional x clamp fix successfully. So I decided to try the "hybrid" method but the 16 mm machine screws were too long for the GPU heat-sink so now I'm getting 2 lights w/0012 as my secondary. Should i just grind down my machine screws as my local hardware store does not seem to have 14mm screws. Or order 14mm screws online.

technojunkie-----I used 16mm screws as well, but used the spring washers and it worked out great.

To clear bad updates, hold the sync up button on the console while powering up the console.

guess i should have said I tried that also, i searched google and it said to try that along with holding the y button on the controller too, but both of those did not work. They were supposed to do the same thing, both clear updates, but no luck.  I know it was an update too b/c i did the fix and it powered up for at least a half an hour before i put it all back together. Then when i hooked it up to play, it updated the console and as soon as it powered back on from the update, it showed the error code 71.

Any other ways to fix the E71 error??? Cant seem to find one online.
