Xclamped, Fan Now Runs Super Fast?
« on: January 04, 2009, 09:08:00 PM »

So I removed the xclamp from the gpu and used the set of screws/washers from llamma.com. I was surprised to see the RROD was gone after my first try. However, after a 15min cooldown, when I powered it up, the fan was running at 100% speed. We had a heatgun and the GPU heatsink was no hotter than 92f and cpu 85f (approx, forget exact temps).

So I removed the GPU heatsink again, removed and reapplied AS5. Fans were now running at 50% speed at dash. Removed gpu HS again, put another small dab, now fans are running somewhere between 20-35% speed (these are approx speeds, id say before RROD my fans were at 10% at dash or so? so in relationship to what I thought was 10% at dash pre-RROD).

I can't seem to get the fans down to what they used to run at. Is there something specific I can look for? Does it take a long time for the inside of a die to cooldown or something?

Well I can only think of one reason off the top of my head and that would be that when you did the x-clamp replacement you didn't tighten them down enough. If the heatsink is not securely fastened pretty tight to the gpu or cpu then the heat transfer will be poor. If the heat transfer is poor then that would be why the heatsinks arent heating up that much and the fans are running like crazy. The gpu or cpu may be getting really hot due to a poor connection and heat transfer between itself and the heatsink, which in turn would cause the fans to run over time because the xbox itself is getting really hot. So what Id do is remove the heatsinks once more and re-do the thermal paste ( make sure you properly clean the old amounts of thermal paste off ) making sure that your just putting a dab of thermal paste ( to much thermal paste could also be a cause for poor heat transer ), slap th x-clamp replacement bolts back in there and make sure they are tightened down enough ( but not too much, you dont want to damage the board or mishape it ) and try it again. After that if it seems that the fans are still tweaked I would try replacing the fans to see if it just aint the fans themselves.

And all of that dont work then I would suspect you have a pretty serious problem somewhere, where? I wouldn't really know, but I hope this info helped.

Hope it works out for ya,

Well I'm not at home to try, but I'm 99% positive I didn't use too much AS5, just the right amount. The screws were tightened like no tomorrow, but not to a cracking point. The die and heatsink did not have a mirror finish once I was done cleaning them, how much will this affect temperatures? I tried several cleaning solutions (safe for the dies) and couldn't get it mirrored. Just wondering if this would affect heat transfer.

Yeah, still running faster than normal compared to friends. It kicks in within 5 seconds of turning it on, does this mean the die isn't being cooled properly?

Quite possibly. Also, one more thing to note. If you want to properly clean all the AS5 off to mirror finish...use regular isopropyl alcohol.  Keep wiping it off in circular fashion...with a microfiber towel.

if your xboox hasn't locked up by now then shut it down and check.........mine did the exact same thing then overheated................i think once you have the overheating problem all you can do is find a way to permanently cool your GPU...............check my post ..............mine is working so well........i can actually touch my heatsink and its just a little warm

Try Goo Gone, its got natural citrus power. Just use as little as possible, since a little goes a long way. It will clean the stains off your heatsinks and the gunk off the processors.

For the think stubborn stuff that gets into the nicks and crannies, I rip off the head of a Q tip and use the stick to get the majority of the gunk out. Used gift cards also work good to get the hard to reach areas and spread the new paste on flat.

After you get all the gunk off, go back with the alcohol and clean up all the Goo Gone and polish as much as your hearts content. Make sure everything is clean and dry.

The alcohol will work by itself for newer xboxes but those that have been heat cycled a lot of times will make that stuff hard to clean off.

The sensor for overheating is under the CPU, did you do the xclamp replacement for the CPU as well?

If the heat transfer paste has turned into solid rock, I am not sure that its doing you justice by not transferring heat to the heat sink.

Did not touch the CPU, and I knew the sensor is under that, that's one reason I'm pretty confused.

If it's still acting up, I'll take off the GPU heatsink again and do everything in my power to make it a mirrored finish. I just don't want to grab something that cleans the block well, but damage the die. I'll make sure to read about anything AND Google.

I highly recommend doing the CPU while you are in there doing the GPU, the xclamp has to flex the board just a little bit.

Now think about it, you are trying to flex the board with these dinky xclamps and now you have fixed one side and one side is nice and tight and the other is loosey goosey. I am inclined to think that the the extra torque created on one side is throwing your balanced xclamp off.

Any gap between the heatsink and the CPU will not promote good heat transfer. The CPU will overheat very quickly, within a few seconds without contact with adequate heat dissipation.

This is just a theory of course, but it would not hurt to get all that microsoft gunk off both the CPU and the GPU die.

Many people advocate using Goo Gone. Just make sure to clean it off with alcohol for a streak free shine.

Uh, unless I'm missing something, each XClamp is independently applying pressure to the die it's associated with.

Wow, I guess the GPU XClamp puts some pressure on the CPU's clamp.

I turned on the Xbox and within 10 seconds, the fans were going at a pretty high speed. I put a lot of pressure onto the CPU heatsink, and immediatly the fan speed dipped down. Repeated this 5 times just to make sure it wasn't a coincidence, and fans went up and down each time I did. Looks like I need another XClamp replacement for my CPU.
