I'd pay $40 for something like this, but $180 is FAR too much - especially considering that it might not even be as accurate as a real mouse/keyboard setup on the PC anyways (like the mediocre splitfish mouse controller for the PS3)

It looks like a lot of work has gone into this, but MS should just allow logitech or someone to make a mouse/keyboard controller and have it ID itself on life so you know if someone is using one.

I have gotten used to the controller anyway, I would rather see the DPAD fixed than this. I opened my controller up over christmas, there are just four contacts on the PCB for the dpad, so I am going to make my own dpad to wire to them, can't be too hard. I am sick of pressing down and having it go diagonal left.

Everyone does realize that for the $180 you pay, you also need a pc hooked up as well to use everything right.  Official XIM FAQ Page

See the link above.  You have to wire this thing inside a controller, then the controller goes the 360 and your PC via USB.  Then you use your keyboard and mouse on your pc, it gets converted on your PC via software to USB to the XIM to the controller to the 360.

What a stupid system to use a keyboard and mouse.  Like everyone has a PC siting right next to their TV.

You can't even buy a new controller for $40, so how would you expect to buy this?

The xim 2 consists of the pcb installed in a brand new controller, flashed, and ready to plug and play.

And the xim 2 IS as if you were playing fps's on your pc. There's no lag.

But yes, the $180 price tag is utter crap. They were talking prices being in the $150's back when they were still using the harder-to-install boards. Those required 26 wires soldered. Now they have these inexpensive, quick to install flex boards and they go and jack the prices up.

I managed to get a few of the diy kits they were selling awhile back. It really does work as it should. But again, for $180 it is no where near being worth it.

So does it work the way that it looks on their site?  You have to use a pc in the middle just to use a keyboard and mouse?

I would say you could also use that $180 towards a PS3, which has keyboard+mouse support, but considering CoD didn't support it, I don't know if a trend of non-kb games will be on PS3 or not. Still, Unreal was a blast w/ keyboard + mouse.

Well I have personally gotten used to controllers to the point I really don't mind as long as everyones using them.  In fact I find them quite decent.  I am definitely better with a mouse and keyboard but game skill and tactics are what I am interested in, as long as the playing field is level, regardless of whether that's all kb/m or all controller, I am fine with it.

I don't like when some people have one and the others another.  It makes the playing field unlevel.  I know you may complain that you suck with a controller so the field isn't level for you, but the difference is you can practice and get better with a controller, but a controller can never be as accurate and effective as a kb/m.

If there was a way as mentioned earlier to ID people using KB/m that would be better so you could at least know and maybe segretate them into their own games, but that's not what MS needs to do with it's online system - break apart a userbase by controller type.

What really gets me is that you have to spend $180 and then have a computer sitting right next to your 360 and TV anyway... sure I know some games aren't on PC or your PC might not be good enough to play the newest games, but really for most people, if you already have the PC hooked up, isn't it just easier to go ahead and play the PC version?

the pc is needed to sort out the dead zone of the controller and have different configs for different games.
if you want k+m then this or xim1 is a must but $180 is to much but then again blame ms for that for not just using the front usb for what they could be used for!

the old diy kits where sold for when they began the xim2 i think they where selling for $50-60 but now they have updated the pcb and sorted other things they are no longer forsale  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

What's really stupid is the fact that as of November 19 2008 with the NXE being released they could have added usb support for keyboards and mice to be used. I mean don't get me wrong I love my 360 controller but I guess I'm just old fashioned and came straight from pc to xbox and do miss my trusty keyboard and mouse from time to time. but yes 180 bucks is ridiculous to say the least.. anyone who buys this is either so rich they just like to waste money or just flat out retarded.
there is probably only 5-10 bucks worth of electronics on that pcb at the most so I just can't see how they justify the cost.

and yes I do realize that there trying to keep xbox and pc separate but it's just stupid not to add support for it.

For $180 you could pay a bit more and get a state-of-the-art PC graphics card.  I've played on both (used to play old frogger on PC) and except for RPG's, a controller is always easier becaue it's designed for console play, while a keyboard/mouse combo was always just an adaptation when the potential of PCs for games was realized.

Nobody buy this, get a nice Nivida SLI card instead.  Get way higher resolution then a 360 anyday.

Rise from your grave!

The older DIY kits were $55 before shipping but required you to buy a controller that you then had to solder the board in to. The entire process took a minimum of two hours, and prebuilt units using this method were expected to cost around $150. Considering the increase in complexity of the boards from the older Revision B and newer Revision D "XFlex" boards, that $30 jump seems justified enough for the cost or a prebuilt XIM2. I'd prefer an $85 PCB and five-minute install myself, but I can solder well enough that the Rev B installation of my own XIM2 was without any mistakes or setbacks, and there are no doubt people who would manage to screw up the installation of the Rev D XIM2. By comparison, an XIM1 setup costs as much as this if the different hardware is purchased brand new, a PC to run the translation software (which is what allows the XIMs to be more accurate than XCM's XFPS or Mayflash's Max Shooter 2 in their emulation of the controller) would still be required, and then a $60 wireless headset is required if the player wanted to regain voice communication ability. The XIM2 doesn't have this problem with wiring a microphone through the device. It also has around 7ms of input lag versus the 35ms of the XFPS (or a XIM1 working through the XFPS), meaning that you can place it on top of an already-laggy PVA/MVA panel and manage to not break a fifteenth of a second between your actions and their appearing onscreen.

Just to clear up the prevalent misconception that the price of these are somehow skewed unfavorably given that the it includes a $30 controller and chip that would probably cost more than $80 if it were bought separately. The price of labor isn't likely to have changed much, if at all. The shock around this price is that people are finally seeing the full cost of implementing mouse/keyboard/joystick/whatever PC input device you have placed on a single piece of hardware, instead of spread over several. Obviously it isn't for everyone, but then how much have you have bothered spending almost as much to attain less functionality out of the earlier adapters? Or how many of you dump over $350 annually in to PC game controllers? $180 ($85 plus shipping and the cost of some wire, actually) to allow myself to use all of my joysticks, pedals, mice, wheels, gamepads, and flight sim gear on my Xbox 360 is well worth the cost.
