1. Why do ya reuse the X CLAMPS it seems like they are not doing anything there???

The x-clamps are reused because they are just about the perfect thickness, they give the foam pads a better surface to sit on, and they have the holes in just the right spots.  You do need to mod them tho first like in the tutorial.  Ideally you would use a metal plate cut to the right size with the holes in place, but since that requires more work and most people don't have sheets of metal .8mm thick laying around,  we came up with the "homemade" version.  Oh yeah another "side effect" of using the plates or reusing the xclamps like this is that they also help absorb a bit of the heat from the bottom side and help transfer that heat to the metal chassis (soft thermal pads of the correct thickness in place of foam can enhance the cooling effect as well).

I did this fix and sadly it has only worked for 3 days.

If people could tell me how long theirs have lasted for it would be good.

Thanks Team Hybrid for putting together this fix for the community.

I had a 0102 error code and tried the T.H.U. fix but it didn't work for me. This was back in January when I had time to do this. I still haven't tried the heat gun so I'll try that during spring break.

Here is an odd question. I recently bought a used Xbox from a lot on ebay and know nothing about its past. its manf. date is 6-24-2006.. It still works, seal has not been broken and has no issues...

Now should I go ahead and do this now as a preemptive measure or does this fall under "If its been working for 3 years, then its immune to the issue, and if it aint broke dont fix it"

Thanks.

I just recently bought an Asian machine new and did it to it, figured it can only help. Being in the UK the warranty was shot anyway.

what about using 4mm of aluminum instead of foam and 0.75mm of aluminum arounf the cpu and gpu and 0.75mm aluminum plate to act like the xclamp like they sell then thermal paste it all together again.... alot cooler and it makes the whole metal case act as a heat sink and will not allow the board to warp or get any hotter just my 2 cents i will be trying my way asap!

I would not try it actually... 4mm aluminum under the board would just cause problems.  It needs to compress down a bit, so 4mm of aluminum would just flex the board badly and not provide the right pressure.  Also there would be a pretty high risk of shorting something out using aluminum.   Aluminum can not be used as a replacement for the credit card strips either.  With so many revisions of the 360, the height of the chips can vary slightly, which is why u sometimes need to sand down the credit cards a little until they are the perfect thickness.  Also plastic is much safer than using metal for the shim since there is a high risk of shorting one of the components.  And the metal plate idea has been done already, that sounds pretty much like the uniclamp, used for the advanced hybrid fix.  Only possible improvement to the uniclamp would be adding thermal pads instead of foam, which we are testing now.  Good luck though if you do try all that aluminum.

lolz that the funnies this i have every heard...
lolz the aluminum will short the hell out of the Caps under the GPU, and will flex the hell out of the board because it will not compress...

Er..... because when you screw it all down, the contacts would go straight through the arctic silver, making contact with the metal.

Sorry, it's a no go. In any case, you want to avoid the possibility of this happening as far as possible. Use a non conducting material instead.

2 days ago i build a 360 in a pc case. And in the process i didnt used plastic washers so the mobo was making contact with the pc case wich leaded to 3 red lights. So i guess the console protected himself.

I have used the method from http://www.i-hacked.com/content/view/263/62/ to fix my nephews xbox 360. It worked perfectly, and it has been three weeks so far. He plays the darn thing a lot, so he was a good test subject. I attempted to fix an xbox 360 I bought from Ebay with the RROD using the same method, but wasn't as lucky. My question - is the i-hacked method a fluke? Did anybody else have success using the i-hacked method? The Ultimate X-clamp fix and this one look similar. Should I focus on using the X-Clamp fix? Thanks.

The x clamp fix mostly only works for a few weeks or months. With most rrod's the solder joints under the GPU or H/ANA chip are broken and this leads to the 3 red lights. If you want to get good results you will have to reflow your motherboard with a heatgun or a oven. The x clamps are a big problem but heat is also a major issue combined with the bad solder. If you wanna prevent more problems in the future i advise to also use the 12v mod on your fans.

And that tutorial from i hacked is just another version of the x clamp fix.

I have three xboxes that I fixed using Team Hybrids method. Two were garden variety 3RROD, one was e74. It seems that while this fix definitely works, after getting the mod done, it can be a bit of a black art when it comes to getting them to run properly. They may boot up fine, but after a few hours or days, or after being left off for a few days, they revert back to being broken. So my experience has been that a lot of care needs to be done right at the end - don't overtighten the screws, don't leave them too slack, and don't tighten one corner at a time - tighten them all together. As an added measure, i added vga ram heatsinks to the two exposed RAM chips, the south bridge chip and the ana/hana chip. Now, I'm looking at making an extra fan shroud that will fit over the gpu heatsink and fit a fan to to it on the right hand side of the DVD drive. The fan will be mounded vertically, so it will suck in and blow cool air over the gpu heatsink, and get expelled by the stock fans. I think this extra belt and braces mod will cure the RROD problem permanently.
