Cygnos360 Dual NAND Chip for Xbox360

From an PR email of Team Cygnos:
Quote

Cygnos, a team of dedicated console "technicans" is proud to anounce the upcoming release of our first product called "Cygnos360". Cygnos360 is a modchip for the easy installation directly onto the underside of the xbox360 mainboard.

Cygnos360 is a dual kernel modchip which adds a secondary NAND flash to the xbox 360 mainboard. It allows switching between the onboard NAND  flash and the Cygnos360 NAND flash. By doing so, users can have an exploitable kernel version such as "4532" or "4548" at the same time as the current kernel version required to play the latest games. Cygnos360 can also be used for switching between kernels patched with different region codes so that users can easily switch between US and EU games for example.

A quick summary of the features:
- adds secondary flash to hold an "alternative kernel" that users can switch to
- fits directly on the bottom side of the xbox360 mainboard
- needs only one wire running on the board
- easy to use "quicksolder pads" which at the same time make sure that the modchip is stuck to the mainboard and does not fall around.
- has solder pads for external switch
- comes with on PCB status LED
- comes with solder pads for external status LED (LED not included)
- Cygnos360 is delivered empty!

I guess this is good news, will certainly make testing things a lot easier.

this looks like a cool release, but Im just gona say you need to know ur drive keys to get this to work?

Be so nice if u can get ur dvd drive keys with this ;D, but this should be a great addon for the hardcore 360 modders.

Thanks for the info (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

It looks like a decent product but i hope that Cygnos realises a few things...

1) Anyone with a release date console that has been refurbished or any newer console can't be downgraded and will never be able to get to 4532 or 4548.  This is likely 95% of consoles or greater due to the rate of RROD in release date consoles.

2)  This most current update appears to require you to have R6T3 installed, meaning that everytime you take a new live update you will have to patch the image on this chip again to contain the new LDV.

This might have been a nice product had it of come out a year and a half ago but even then that's pushing the limits for spending money to produce the board.  This isnt a new idea - people have done this for quite some time (xD mod, dual nands, etc...).

Furthermore, how do you dump your existing NAND and program this new product?  Does this require an infectus as well?  If so, why not have an infectus perminantly installed and just rewrite your onboard NAND each time.  It only takes 5minutes or so to write it, its not a big deal.

For all those who think this is a great idea, do some research before you buy it.  It most likely will be useless to you and will be a waste of money.

I think i should further clarify after reading their website, THIS DOESNT ALLOW YOU TO BOOT 4532 or 4548 ON YOUR CONSOLE.  IF YOUR KERNEL REVISION IS GREATER THAN THAT, YOU NEED TO BE ABLE TO DOWNGRADE.  IF YOU ARE IN THAT CASE, READ POINT #1 ABOVE.  IF YOUR CONSOLE CAN BE DOWNGRADED, YOU WILL HAVE TO BUY APPROXIMATELY $100 WORTH OF GOODS TO BE ABLE TO DO SO.  AT THAT POINT, YOU WILL ALREADY OWN AN INFECTUS AND DONT REALLY NEED THIS ADDON.

Caster.

so  is it really just a replacement flash that will still need a INFECTUS chip to dump all the info from your 360 only now when writing back a old kernel for exploits you can use this to keep the real kernel safe for normal use

not bad just hope it dont cost to much or it may work out cheaper to just buy another old console for exploits or pal-ntsc

This product is kinda pointless until we can run decent homebrew apps.

There must be a cut-off as to when this changed, as my refurbished 360 (which was subsquently banned last year) downgraded without any problem as the Kernel BK was still on 2.0.1888.0.

Whilst it's probably safer to assume all refurbs will be upgraded from this, I'd still advise people to check this prior to writing it off.

If this product will turn out to be success (which I doubt) we could expect clones at a lower cost since this is not some kind of advanced chip, just a flash memory with no advanced logic board. So in my eyes this product is not some kind of revolution

this item can be a success. it doesn't necessarily have to run homebrew (since homebrew for the 360 isnt well developed yet, well as far as i know) and this item can be used to run import games since theoretically, i could load another firmware for a different region on the thing and swith between lets say ntsc and ntsc-j

It doesn't say if it does or does not have the ability to dump your original NAND, but it sure looks like it probably does not.. so yeah.. people with new 360s will probably have to use other hardware to dump the original NAND.  Hopefully it will be cheap because of this.  Since the original NAND only has to be dumped once, an installer could use a single infectus mod for multiple installs.  And if more people can use the exploit from the older kernel (which this mod would encourage), maybe the homebrews will improve.

I'm pretty sure all those issues will be explained on the site before it goes for sale.

It's a shame I don't have an Xbox with an old kernel, I wanted so bad to play some japanese only games. I wanted to buy a japanese Xbox for that, but it'll cost too much to import it. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

Is this one step closer to XBMC on xbox 360?  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/pop.gif)

No - it's just something to enable those with vulnerable kernels to have a dual booting system. As Caster420 rightly pointed out, there's an issue with NXE where it needs R6T3 in place to function, meaning you'll blow efuses each time you update.

I suppose it would be useful to use it as a region changer (have an NTSC dump on one NAND and a PAL dump on the other) so you could import games and play them on the respective NAND. I don't know however what this would do with the efuses when you went to update it/them.
