360 Controller Poweroff Problem
« on: November 11, 2008, 04:35:00 PM »

The AA battery pack has a sorta design flaw in it (IMO) that can cause that issue, why they made it like they did is beyond me as it serves no purpose whatsoever. There's a switch inside the back that closes when the pack is inserted into the controller, it's basically just 2 metal tabs in the pack and then that small tab that sticks up in the center of the battery compartment on the controller, but if the metal in the pack gets sprung or dirty that can break the connection between the batteries and the controller dies.

This is what the switch looks like and ya can see that the tab in the controller pushes up on the bottom piece which makes it touch the top one, which then connects the batteries..

The easiest thing to do to try and get the thing working again is to take a couple small pieces of tape and stick them over the tab in the controller that pushes on the battery pack's contact. This will make the tab higher, a sorta shim between them, and push a little harder on the contact when the pack is installed and will usually resolve the issue. Alternately you can put a couple of pieces in the square hole on the back of the battery pack where ya can see the bottom contact, the one the tab in the battery compartment pushes on.

Other methods are to use an 'L' shaped awl to spring the tab back to a better location from inside the pack or to just use the PnC battery pack.
