I too had a similar situation and I don't know the cause of this happening but here's my experience, I was playing my Verbatim Singapore backup of Bad Company when I decided to play Halo 3 and I glanced at Bad Company and there were 1/4" arcs (they look like this ---> ")") on the disc, there were close to 50 of them all over the disc.  I found that by taking my clean thumb and gently rubbing over the arcs that they would go away with no physical damage to the disc.  This occurred with both original and Verbatim Singapore backup media and about a week later my Hitachi 47 died.  Maybe your drive is trying to wave bye bye one last time lol.

yeah...so it happened again...this time only 1 scratch and its a scratch this time not a smudge. what could possibly being causing this?
