First of all if you cannot tell the difference between composite and component on the wii then you need glasses, plain and simple.
I was going to make this same point, but you beat me to it. Component was being pushed way before HD. It was an upgrade to S-Video which was an upgrade to Composite. The separation of colors and brightness meant a MUCH better picture. It eliminated the rainbow effect of parallel lines, picture distortion from motion on the other side of the screen, and ghosting caused buy dark and bright images in line with each other. (No I don't know the technical terms) The difference is huge... it was the best thing introduced prior to HD and digital connections.

Question is, why in this day in age are switches necessary for choosing the correct device.  Shouldnt it be done automatically?

If it really had to have a switch, why not a remote wire where you can hide the converter and have a switch that mounts to the tv or other convient location.  Having to have the whole converter box with all the componet wiring out in front looks so cluster F*&^ed.

I agree with everyone that thinks this a stupid device. Most if not all tvs that have hdmi inputs also have plenty of component and composite plugins. My 32" Vizio LCD has 2 or 3 of each.

They only place I could see this being usefull is to plug in an older system into a Computer LCD Monitor that has an HDMI input.
