Hard Drive Causing Xbox To Hang
« on: September 15, 2008, 02:41:00 PM »

I don't know much about the 360 Hdd but i do know on the PC side of things that when a computer starts to hang because of a hard drive its because it is failing. If you notice when the xbox is hanging you can put your ear to the hard drive and hear the sound of it attempting several times trying to spin up but failing. If possible I would try to back up all of your game saves and very this before it goes completely gone. If it still under warranty I would contact MS and see if they send a replacement.

Recently my Xbox has been hanging at boot up. It will hang on the splash screen for a couple of minutes then go to the dashboard. Once on the dashboard the Xbox will hang intermittently. If I remove the HDD, it will boot up a run normally. Obviously i would like storage for the Xbox. I bought a 120 GB SATA HDD. I cannot retrieve any info off of the old HDD with Xplorer360. It doesn't even recognize that the HDD is there. Can i rebuild a HDD from scratch?

Do you have the retail 20GB / 120GB HDD attached when this is happening?

Since your PC cant read from the harddisk either I guess it will be extremely damaged, does it make any noise when you connect it, do you hear/feel that it is spinning?
This already kind of points out that it wont be your Xbox 360 but just to make sure connect the 120GB one and test if it works properly...

The HDD spins but I am not hearing any clicking  or sick noises from it. If i connect it to my laptop (via external SATA case) you do not see the HDD in the disk management portion of the admin tools in Vista. I've heard bad HDD before in my line of work and this does not "sound" bad. This is the original HDD that came with the unit. It's a 20 GB Seagate HDD. Unfortunately it is not under warranty or even cover under Microsoft's "3 year extended warranty" that they publicized because it "not part of the console".

You cant see it in windows, you have to use xplorer...
YOu can download that tool on the main page...

I installed Xplorer360 and ran it as an admin but i get the "Could not find a FATX drive to open" message. Tried the program on XP with the same result. Although i wish i could retrieve my saved files i would just be happy to format a new bulk SATA HDD and install it into the Xbox HDD case.

Hmm
Just to make some things clear which might be quite obvious but fatal in this.
Make sure that you have connected two cables to the harddisk the SATA Power cable and the SATA Data cable and that it is also plugged in properly in your PC...
SInce it is a laptop this could also cause problems so if you can try a desktop computer.
