Ring Of Death 1023 Code
« on: August 08, 2008, 06:27:00 PM »

1023 is not the ROD it is 1 red light and E75 should show up on your screen.
This error is a cold solder joint under the ethernet chip.
It can also be a cold joint under the Southbridge(traces which lead to it)

The only way to fix it is pretty much to reflow the area from the Southbridge to the ethernet chip.

Just double check that your error code is really 1023 though
The net work chip is okay, if it was dead you would get E76 aka 1030.

There is a link to my heatgunning tutorial in my signature, check it out...

The info for that code is wrong. You don't get any kind of error if you DVD-ROM is disconnected, though (at least if you have a Hitachi, not sure about others) if it is unplugged, you'll get a flashing green light in the middle of the ROL (the system will still boot fine), and it will say "Opening" or "Close Tray" on the dashboard.

Ah ye this is actually right, only for Hitachis though.
I remember a time when I got the 1 red light because a sata cable wasnt plugged in properly.
For all other 360s it shows the error codes though even if the light is blinking, I check it like this all the time...

So here's the updated scenario.  When I turn the 360 on I get 3 blinking red lights.  I check the secondary error code and it's 1023.  Nothing comes on the screen at anytime.  No error code or anything.

Connect your DVD-drive and then check again

Bump, I'm confused on what I need to do to fix this.  What's the correct info for the error code?  Did my drive possibly just crap out and I need to replace it, or is it something else?

Well.
You should be getting one light and 1023, so I hope you are referring to the 1 red light as the "Ring of Death"(R.O.D is 3 red lights)

Bump, I still have no clear information on what's actually going wrong here.  I'm getting red in 3 sectors on boot, then secondary error code 1023.  Likely shot drive?

Unplug the drive and see how it acts.

Or does this mean infact the drive has nothing to do with the error and I should just fallback and do the heatgun fix?

Not to bring up an old thread for nothing.  But I just wanted to confirm that i had a 1023 error and indeed it was a southbridge problem.    Looks like someone had tried heatgunning the southbridge before. so I pulled it.  Although the southbridge was attempting to boot up the system and was probably at least partially functional I decided not to reuse it since it looked like it had been on the grill for awhile .  Yanked another one from a spare board. reballed it and the system boots fine now. and yes i reballed it by hand. The southbridge is the easiest of the 360's BGA chips (still a pain in the arse though)
