im looking at getting into the same thing here, i've got the hot air re-flow station, and am waiting on some other tools off ebay... a re-balling jig, with universal templates. im goin to re-ball the gpu to start with and see where things go from there.

i'll let yas know how things go when i get the stuff and attempt the first one

A lot of us have been itching to see this done, homebrew style.  Where did you find your reballing jig? How much? wait wait, I would rather see some results posted with the answers to my questions.  

Sounds like random knows how to do it, the only thing I might suggest is posting you procedure and letting some of the members around here that are in the industry take a look at your method.  You probably know more than I do, but a lot of good ideas have come out of discussions on topics like these.

One suggestion for anyone trying this, get a good microscope for inspection of your balls (haha I said balls) Also do some research on BGA failures, you will be surprised at what can cause them, like flux.

edit: IR rework station may be the better choice here, but don't be discouraged by hot air, it can work too.
