Replacing Ethernet Chip Error 75,76 U181 U182
« on: August 04, 2008, 09:58:00 AM »

Ok, I had this 360 with error 76. A search suggested is was Ethernet problem. So on the motherboard, right behind the network connector is possibly the worlds smallest 32 pin SMD j hook chip designator u181. I got an idea to try booting up the 360 with my finger pushing down in this tiny chip. To my surprise it worked, xbox boots up fine, I can even let go of the chip and system runs fine for hours, even network works. So I booted it up half a dozen times with my finger on chip, worked every time. Without finger, E76. So I then attempted to reflow U181. After first attempt, Still E76 and now finger pressure no longer works. My next attempt is with a soldering iron, because I could see the edge of the "J" pin I touched each pin with iron. Made worse, now it was E75. So now I have completely desoldered u181 and believe it is damaged or defective.

Where can one get a replacement for this chip? I did a search on the printed numbers and got nothing. Also there is a larger chip you can get, u182 which would be preferable. Any info on suitable replacement other than  pulling from a dead 360?

Nice findings am gonna add this to my error code guide...

I dont think you can buy this chip anywhere, guess thats what RDC said in a similar thread like that.
However I got an old Xenon mainboard with this square 32 pin chip and I could desolder it and ship it to you if you want to, send me a PM if you are interested.
Wait for RDC to confirm it though because one of the two chips cant be replaced but I guess it was the rectangle one...

The deal with swapping it over to the ICS chip (U1B2) is that the support components have to change as well, and there are quite a few of them around there that are different, so you're better of replacing it with the BCM chip (U1B1) like was originally in it. Unfortunately that's the one that finding a replacement for is a witch, you'll need to get it from another 360 board. The ICS chip ya can find all over and I have some of those here, but as I said ya can't just straight swap it for the BCM one without having to swap all that other stuff with it.

I'd be a tad bit skeptical of that thing being the actual problem, applying pressure to one spot on the board bends it in places ya can't even imaging, so ya could have been changing pressure on the Southbridge, GPU, CPU or just about any place on the board really and that was where the real problem was instead of exactly where ya were pressing. On the other hand, a 360 missing the Ethernet chip does throw an e76 error code with a secondary of 1030, so it could be the chip that was bad or had a bad solder joint, possibly hit by lightning as well since it doesn't have to strike anywhere near ya to kill that thing, in any case you'll have to replace it to see what the deal is now. Unfortunately I do not have the proper tools to properly solder the small 181 or 1B1. Too bad about the 1B2 chip as I most likely could have pulled off soldering that one in.

It did cross my mind that it was the BGA southbridge as many traces go directly to that chip so in the first reflow I did, I worked over that chip as well.

I'm going to attempt to resolder 1B1 anyway as before I took the iron to it I had a solid E76 and then E75 after.  I'm going to end up spending way more time than it's worth on this board because I'm stubborn.

If you're in the US and need I can put that thing back on there (the right way) and see if it works, I have another board here with one on it to swap over and try as well. PM me about it if ya like.

actually this error happens because of broken solder under the south bridge , the chip fot the ethernet is close to the south bridge , thats why when you press on that chip , the south bridge gets some pressure and boots up , the right thing to do is to resolder back you original chip of ethernet and then reflow the south bridge ,
