Rrod Console Missing Resistor Under Gpu!
« on: July 29, 2008, 10:38:00 AM »

Hey guys.  I recently bought a RROD console off of someone on the BST.  It is a launch console with a manufactures date of October 10th, 2005, thus it is a Xenon board.  It came and I have been working on it with no success.  I went and looked at the underbelly of the mobo and it looks like a resistor is missing(at least I think it is a resistor...)  It is one of those small brown rectangles.  Here is a picture...

I don't know if maybe, a big maybe, ill get lucky by just bridging the contact and it be all fine and dandy.  However, it is placed on the mobo for a reason.  It also looks like the pad was lifted with it.  If I do need a resistor, (if that is even what it is) can anyone identify the type of resistor?  Possible to pick one up from radioshack?  Or am I better off parting the system out?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

That is a capacitor. RDC correct me if I am wrong, you might not need it, if you do, you are gonna have some trouble because yes, the pad has been lifted.

It is a capacitor otherwise it would start with an "R" and not a "C"...
And it does indeed look like the pad is gone maybe you get lucky and you can restore it somehow, there is a trace fixing tutorial in the FAQ you might want to take a look on that...
If you dont have the capacitor anymore or it is broken or so send me a PM because I still have a fucked up xenon mainboard and could ship it to you...

*EDIT*
Something just came to my mind, this missing capacitor might only trigger 0020(as it is not right under the GPU) which is overwritten by 0102.
So there will most likely still be a cold solder joint, try to fix this one first.
If the error code changes to 0020 afterwards you know that you will have to replace the capacitor...

The first letter in the board designation is the component, C = Capacitor, R = Resistor, U = IC and so on. The second number/letter is the grid location it's at on the board while the last number is the number of that type of component in that particular grid. So..

C5R20 is a Capacitor in grid 5R and is the 20th Capacitor in that grid section.

@ Chimp5000 - It'll be alright with it missing and it's not causing the issue you're having. Every other Cap there that's the same size as well as the ones on top of the board in the same location are all in parallel with it, so that one missing isn't really going to make a difference or cause an error code, and the lifted pad isn't causing any issue either.

Ok cool guys.  So it looks like this may be fine then, I just need to try a bit more to get it working then...thanks so much guys, I was scared I was going to have to solder a mad small capacitor onto the board right underneath the gpu!!!!

I had just realize that my capacitor was loose, good thing it was still on there... I am going to solder and heatgun the mobo to see my results....

I am having error code 0020. ph34r.gif
