Xim360 - An Amazing Mouse And Keyboard Device
« on: July 17, 2008, 02:35:00 PM »

Just wanted to let all of you in on a bit of good news from the Mouse and Keyboard on the Xbox360 world.

For those of you who may already be familiar with the XIM (Xbox Input Machine), you know that it was capable of taking the XFPS's capabilities and enhancing them 10-fold to make a usable mouse and keyboard experience with most games on the console.  Since you're familiar, read below for the good news.

For those of who who don't know the XIM, read on.  XIM started as an enhancement for the XFPS.  Anyone who has used the XFPS regardless of which edition knows that no matter what you do it just doesn't offer the same experience.  The guy behind the project, OBsIV found that it was possible with the combination of additional hardware and a special piece of software that you could create a much more accurate experience with the mouse and keyboard in games like COD4 and Halo 3.  But, this experience wasn't quite as good as it could be due to the limitations in the hardware that the XIM used.  So he went back to the drawing board and created a piece of hardware and new software that could deliver the experience that you've always hoped to get with a mouse and keyboard on a console, appropriately named XIM2.

So, what's the good news in all of this blabbering?  The XIM2 is now being pre-ordered and will ship in 2 weeks.

Our community is fairly small right now, but it's full of eager and helpful people.  We would like more people to join and share the joys of what XIM allows you to do.

Here's a link to the website:

If you're interested in ordering check this specific thread:

Here's a video of it in action:

And a picture of the PCB in case you're curious as to what you're getting into:

If you guys could, we would appreciate a post on the front page.

Thanks and enjoy,

Does this device translate USB mouse movements into analog joystick ones, like a variable resistance on the x and y axes?

If so, can it be implemented into other consoles?

Hmm I think I'm going to order one but what exactly are you soldering onto the board? the mouse and keyboard?

I would buy this as a ready to use unit... if it's as good as it seems.

You solder the xim2 pcb to the controller, and a usb port. Use that port to connect the pcb to the PC. The software uses the mouse and keyboard plugged into your PC to control the xbox360 controller.  solder points

Ah I see.. I ordered one, doesn't look too hard to solder that. Hopefully it works on Vista. Thanks for the info.

I noticed there have been a few questions surrounding XIM.  As far as installation is concerned, the device is soldered inside a 005 version wired controller.  It is then connected to your Xbox via the wired controller's USB cable and connected to your PC via the USB cable soldered to the XIM PCB.  The software then translates your mouse and keyboard's movements on your PC into the movements you would otherwise make with your controller.  Works with Windows, both Vista and XP for sure.

Check out the XIM FAQ for answer to more questions you may have:

I'm just really hoping that this will give me a way to use my Driving Force Pro wheel with Forza2, since MS doesn't seem to have any intention of supporting logitech peripherals.

That seems to be possible, you might want to check out this topic from the xim forums: http://xim360.com/co...php?topic=496.0

You better get this thing too, if you hope to fool your friends. Word is that the XFPS just plain doesn't deliver.

Kinda interested in getting one of these, myself. I've always wanted to play Gears with a keyboard+mouse, but don't want the PC version.

Do not get an XFPS dude, it will be the worst investment you ever make.  If you don't want to take my word for it, go and read the dozens of disappointed posts about it over at http://www.xim360.com/community
