It is nothing of all that...
It is Southbridge related and definitely needs a reflow
Do what I told this guy...

Well it is the silver chip with the Xbox 360 label near the DVD drive plugs and left of the ANA chip and the GPU heatsink

ait. could you also mybe tell my why when i turn my 360 on, the fans start spinning really fast, and then it gives me 2 red lights and shuts off?

Well since you applied the X Clamp fix first check the secondary error code 0011 means it is the CPU 0012 GPU then make sure the die of the chip has good contact with the heatsink, remove a washer and then try again also make sure the die is clean and that you applied the right amount of thermal compound (size of a rice grain)

Hi, I just got the 0021 error code aswell and I have the xtreme52a firmware on my drive but the only time I get the error code is when I go to connect my HD DVD Drive? I bought one today from Gamestation (25 QUID!!!) and as soon as I installed the disc on the xbox, plugged in the HD DVD Player as instructed and there it was! 0021!!! Is this coincidence or can anyone elaborate on this.

I might add that if I leave the console for about 10 minutes, turn it on, it boots up fine.

Any help would be appreciated,

Cheers.

Might be a fucked up USB port try another might just be a fucked up trace to the Southbridge...
The fact that it does away is that when the xbox heats up it looses the connection.
If it doesnt go away after unplugging the hddvddrive or you want to repair the USB traces you will have to heatgun the Southbridge area like this guy as well

This is exaclty what i'm getting too. I'm wondering how is it possible for the CPU to overheat from a cold start? Can anyone shed some light on the matter? Also, i've noticed if you push down on the CPU heatsink, the RROD status changes from lights 1 and 3 to 3 and 4. (error code still remains 0011 however)

The error code change has to do with the stand sensor when you push it down you irritate it...

Instant overheating happens when the heatsink doesnt have any contact with the chip die, use less washers.

I've attemtped many times, using 1 washer, 2 washers, none and still get the same problem. I even mounted a pentium 4 478 cooler by holding it down via hand pressure and still zilch. So your saying there is a sweet spot for the heatsinks to sit? I would of thought apply as much pressure as possible to the heatsink would give some results, obvisouly not. Thanks for the information.

Hmm, does it leave an imprint of the thermal compound on the heatsink?
Sometimes chips are pretty flexed and the heatsink doesnt get any contact...

Also, i discovered when excessive pressure is put on the CPU Heasink, I noticed the board started to boot with the green lights circling (nothing on screen) for 3 seconds then went back to 2 RROD. So, i'm wondering if reflowing the solder on the CPU would have an effect.

Might have an effect.
Just to clarify before you cut the sensor.
Did you clean the chip die with alcohol to a mirro finish and then applied an extremely thin layer of compound that you spread out evenly over the whole die?

Ok i've decided to go and cut the thermo sensor. Where abouts is the wire trace that i need to cut?

Thanks for that. That fixed the temp sensor problem. However, now i'm getting 0020. Under close inspection, five wires have be cut near the first ram chip, running to the GPU. Seems to me the previous owner of this xbox 360 had no idea what he was doing. Good news is I can feel heat being transferred through the CPU heatsink.

Replacing those wires looks like tricky business, and most likely impossible to repair without an extremely fine solder and steady hand. Too bad this thing didn't have a warranty sticker.   Any ideas?

LOL
Too good you dont have a warranty sticker because this was warranty fraud and is not tolerated on X-S

The 0020 can be caused by cut traces in the GPU/RAM area, so this will be the cause.
Go to the FAQ section in the Hardware Modding forum there is a guide on trace repairs...

Oh sorry, I didn't mean it like that. I meant if it was still in warranty, and un-opened i would have sent it to MS. With the condition this box is in, I'm pretty sure MS would have worked out that it had been tampered with.

Thanks for the guide looks helpful. But i don't think that guide was designed for this kind of damage, hoping it's only one pcb layer stuffed up:

At least the three holes/scratches/whatever are cutting the same lines.
I would suggest that you start where the straight lines are and reconnect the 9 broken traces with the straight lines on the other side...

Sounds like a plan. Trying to get round that screw hole will be a problem though, unless fine insulated wire is used. I'll have to think about it.

Edit: Do recommend any specific soldering iron/tool for this fine work? My current soldering iron is good, but i don't think the tip will be fine enough for this kind of job.

Hmm

Just curious, how much would a motherboard with a DVD key cost?

If it got the ROD around 20€.
Completely new ones around 145€.
All prices on ebay, here a little example, it is German but whats important are the numbers anyway so...
