Dvd Drive Won't Eject!
« on: May 26, 2008, 04:08:00 AM »

The other day my 360 died with the RROD fault.

I managed to get it to work by removing the x clamps and doing the mod.

Since I put it back together it will not eject. When you press the exect button it says opening and closing tray in the dashboard, but the drive does not move a millimetre.

I have taken the top off the drive to see if the belt is slipping, but it's not. The drive doesn't do anything at all.

Has anyone got an idea what is wrong with it? The drive worked fine before the RROD...

Do I need to get a  new drive or do you think that the mobo is dead?

Appologies in advance if this has been covered before, I tried searching but found nothing similar...

Thanks in advance!

I doubt that there are literally hundreds of posts like that...

Replace/Clean the belt...

If you read what I wrote carefully you would see that I have already checked the belt. I cannot see what  good changing the belt will do when the nylon pulley wheels that turn the belt are not even moving. - constructive advice would have been more appreciated rather than un-necessary sarcasm...

What I am trying to ascertain is whether the drive has died or it is a fault on the board.- If there are hundreds of posts "like that" then please point me in the direction and I will stand corrected....  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/mad.gif)

If it was working fine before ya messed with it and now it's not that's pretty apparent when the problem happened, and since you were there the best person to know what is wrong is you, even if ya don't, and no one here is going to be able to tell ya if ya need a new drive or not and mean it until every other possibility has been exhausted. So troubleshoot it and find out...

Does it have the same problem from both the dashboard as well as Eject button?

Does the power LED flash after pressing Eject?

Is it plugged in? Both SATA and Power cables all the way? Tried reseating them? or other cables?

If you manually open it will it close via the dash or Eject button?

Have another drive there (or can borrow one) to install to see if it will Eject or not?

If ya happened to plug the drives power cable in upside down (people do this for real) and fired the 360 up it's toast for sure.

2) Does the power LED flash after pressing Eject?

Hi RDC, thanks for your advice, to reply, I've numbered your ideas above:

1) yes
2) yes
3) yes
4) It will not open or close whatsoever unless you do it manually. I have tried from the dash and using the remote- neither trigger the drive to eject, but after you press the eject button, the message in the display on the screen changes from open tray to close tray even though nothing actually happens.. (does that make sense? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sleep.gif) )
5) unfortunately not but I can have a word about and see if anyone has one
6) I checked the power cable carefully and made sure that I only plugged it in the correct way, i.e. the smooth side of the connector went to the smooth side of the socket, the side with the 2 lugs went to the corresponding side too.

From this are you saying that the power cable to the drive has a specific end that plugs into the mobo and a specific end that plugs into the drive? both ends of the cable looked identical to me, the only indication I could see is that the plugs have only one way round that they will fit. (I have only fitted them to wnat I percieve to be the 'correct' way around)

Again, thanks for your guidance so far- I'm really getting to the stage where I am running out of ideas!

As the other pal , I have exact the same problem! He stays corrected and we need a solution

I have done all possible things I could to test the dvd but the result still the same.. not a single move from the dvd mechanism! The dashboard and leds are acting as they supposed to be, the cables were changed with others, even the old cables work with other xbox360, won;t close if you manually open it and still the same.

You say about reseting the cables? what do u mean? Also in case I can find a new drive, how can I make it work with my xbox360? I know mainboard and the dvd drive's controller are one pair and can;t be seperated.  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/uhh.gif)

@ MadMaxGR - Not resetting the cables, re-seating them, unplug them and plug them back in to make sure they are connected together good.

If you get a new drive it depends on what you get to replace it to the amount you'll ahve to do to get it to work.

@ CDPDesign - The cable ends are the same and either one can go to the motherboard or drive, I mean upside down plugged into the drive.

Unless ya had the drive apart I'd say it's not sounding that good, though I'd really want to see how another drive worked in that 360 or how that drive worked in another 360 to be sure. There's so many things on a motherboard that could be messed with and cause any number of issues, then again it's not uncommon for a drive to up and die on it's own either, may just be a rotten coincidence it died after fixing the motherboard, might not be. Until ya can get another drive to really narrow the problem down to 360 or drive you're kinda stuck for now.

Most times if the Samsung fries it really does fry, take the thing apart and pull the board out of it and look around for any burnt components or see if something doesn't look quite right.

I can get a new BENQ or SAMSUNG drive, but I am suspicious that the board at my failed dvd is the problem, so  I have to ask:

1. How to I make the new drive to match the mainboard? (I heard about exctracting the key from your old drive)
2. If dvd's controller board is fried, how to I extract it's key?

Please help!

1. Extract the key from the original drive and inject it into the FW of the new drive, then spoof the new drive so it reports it's the same model/version that the original one is. Really depends on what drive ya have and what shape it's in as to how much work will be involved. There are plenty of tutorials on how to do all that in the Newbie Chat and DVD-ROM Technical forums Pinned topics.

2. If the board is fried you'll have to remove the SST chip from the board and have it dumped with an external programmer to get the key.
