What's Wrong With My Xbox?
« on: May 24, 2008, 01:26:00 PM »

My 360 dies the other day for the second time.

The first time I got the ring of death it was just out of it's warranty, and it was before microsoft said they were extending their warranty, so I sent it away to a firm to get it fixed. It had the mod done to get it working and all has been fine for about 4 months or more.

The other day, I got the ring of death again and I searched extensively on how to fix it.

Subsequently, I have stripped the xbox down, removed the heatsinks, cleaned it all up, put new arctic silver 5 compound on the die's and re-assembled.

Everything is re-assembled correctly, but as soon as I power up all I get is the two red lights on the left flashing.

Everything i come up with is saying that the console has overheated, but it's absolutely stone cold. When I switch it on, I get the green lights flashing round and round in a circle for a few seconds, then within 5 seconds, the two lights on the left come on flashing red.

How can I solve this problem? Could it be that my console is cooked beyond repair?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated / is there any way of re-setting  it to clear this fault?

Thanks in advance! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

You are using too much thermal paste and or (most likely) you don;t have the xclamps properly tensioned and placed.

At this point you should do a full x-clamp replacement.

I've done the xclamp mod already; I just cannot get rid of the 2 red lights for some reason. I've only put a thin smear of grease on the die's - any ideas?

this could be that the gap between the mobo and the heat sinks is too great (too many wasshers or too big washers)
i often test mine with the mobo out and sitting on the desk just place the heatsinks on the dies (make sure there is thermal paste there) and plug in all needed cables before bolting to the case.
this test will ensure there is no gap between the heatsinks and dies

Solved the problem in the end- I cleaned off the thermal compound and reapplied several times, tightening the screws up differently each time...

The 360 is working fine now apart from the dvd drive which is as dead as a dodo- I don;t know why as it worked fine beforehand...

When you press the eject button on the console it changes the message on the screen from open to close tray but the tray doesn't move an inch- it's not the belt in the drive, as nothing in the drive moves at all even if you take the belt off- I'd tearing my hair out to find out what I've done wrong!    (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)
