Ts-h943 Open/close Issue
« on: May 23, 2008, 03:21:00 PM »

Hello, I just picked up a used xBox yesterday and after repairing the defective power connector on it, I finally got it fired up to try it out. It all came on and looked like all was well until I tried the DVD drive.

It randomly will not eject or close when the button is pressed. I removed the cover and manually inserted a game, put the cover back on and it worked fine. when I hit eject at that point, the drive opened right up. However, with the game back out it started acting up again on the open/close. I noticed with the cover off that when it closes, it doesn't appear to be bringing the laser assembly all the way up. If I manually rotate the gear accessible on the front of the drive under the tray, I can bring it up and it will open back up correctly the next time.

Does anyone know why the laser/spinning mechanism would not be fully coming into it's proper position? Is there a known issue with these drives? Anything I can grease to makes things move more smoothly? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

It's the belt, clean or replace it.

Well, it doesn't appear to be the belt. I replaced it tonight with a tighter one. While the laser mechanism now seems to move up ad down fully, the try will randomly open properly. 4 out of 5 times, it sticks and I have to keep hitting the eject button till it finally comes out. Any ideas? The drive works fine when reading discs. Thanks!

You can try cleaning and regreasing everything that moves in there, that might straighten it out, sounds like it's binding on something somewhere. Does it open/close fine with the Bezel removed? or the case off of the 360?

Got exactly the same issue with exactly the same drive. Isn't anything to do with regreasing or belt. Will open fine if you manually twist the cog at the front to disengage the magnet assembly.

When you push the drive all the way in it seems to catch in some way. The xbox looks like it's attempting to open the drive without pulling the laser mechanism down first. V odd.

Works no problem with the top off... but of course your DVD's would become frizbees!

sounds to me like the spindle magnet has come loose. glue it back down with a small drop of super glue, and make sure you push the magnet down all the way

I had the same exact problem and fixed it with a bit of glue:

Link to my thread

try that and see if it works, it seemed on mine that the magnetic pieces weren't coming apart and that was preventing the drive from opening. So a little glue on the metalic disk on the top cover fixed it
