360 Locking Up Baaaaaad!
« on: April 29, 2008, 12:01:00 AM »

So here is my problem. Had my DVD-ROM firmware flashed to read all media to play my back ups about 7 months ago. Recently I have been having problems with games locking up on me. My xbox is currently pushing 2 years and I play it everyday. The specific games I've had problems with are Army of Two (alot, to the extent I couldn't make any progress through the game without it locking up), and now as of 20 minutes ago, GTA IV. Both the original and backup are giving me problems (as in 6 lock ups total in 10 minutes). So I automatically jump to the conclusion that maybe I have a bad laser now? But the thing that gets me is I play NHL 08 religiously and put in 2-3 hours every day and I have not once ever had this lock up on me. Seems to be only certain games, if that's possible. Any advice?

That's what I usually see.

certain games stress the system more causing more heat, if thats what the lock ups are related to.

sucks you got GTA IV at midnight and have this problem, my sympathies.

Well sending it to MS is out of the question since my warranty is of course voided. When you say fix it yourself, what can I do? Is the problem isolated to heat or is it my laser?

My 360 is doing the same thing. Some games run fine, others (GTA4 sad.gif) crash after 5 minutes of play. I get in this morning after waking up early (dont work till noon) just to have it crash after 5 minutes of play. I took apart my 360 (seal was broken before I even got the console), replaced the thermal paste and put a desk fan pretty much directly on the heatsinks (moved the dvdrom drive out of the way for the GPU heatsinc), and I was able to play for like 10 minutes (longer, still!) but it still eventually crashed when cops came and shot me dead at the airport sad.gif

edit: I should probably also mention that I replaced my laser (Friday), but that didnt do it (halo 3 still gives me DDEs sometimes, overheating problem, maybe?)

Interesting you say that you replaced your laser, because that would tell me our DVD drives are most likely not the culprit. I'll direct you to this thread because I think it's the solution, but I'm waiting for a confirmation.

i just read on kotatku that there is a problem affecting some console owners where it freezes during the opening cut scene, is this where it locks up?

Replaced my thermal paste on the gpu, blasted the chip with a heat gun as listed here: http://forums.xbox-s...howtopic=646900 and still locks up on me. I'm out of solutions on this one, and am desperate for help!

Just to update:

I've ruled out the medium of the discs, as well as the burning itself. Took a friends copy of GTA4 and backed it up with my burner, verbatim medium and produced a back up. He's been playing all day without hitches. Tried giving my console tons of air (playing in a well fanned area without top or bottom on). Tried without HDD, tried clearing cache. I think I covered all the basics.

It must have something to do with games taxing out the system. The two main games I mentioned, GTA 4 and Ao2 seem to be games that would do that. I don't think it's heat related based off of the playing without cover, re pasting my heat syncs, and the absence of the 2 red lights. I don't have an E74 error but I tried the fix for it as stated earlier.

So after all of that, back to step one! I'm out of ideas. Tried google, tried other forums, tried this one...couldn't find anything.

Should also note that I tried going right into multiplayer and I froze within 5 minutes of playing that...this is becoming really annoying. I can't play GTA 4 sad.gif

I feel ya man.  My 360 has been working flawlessly for over a year now with the xclamp replacement.  Today after 2 hours of GTA:IV, I get the 0110 RROD error.  I am going to try to identify which ram chip is giving me the problems over the next week or so.  I am hoping it is one under the GPU HS as I can just put a washer/penny to give it some pressure.  The others are going to be a nightmare to get pressure on them.  I may end up getting some VGA mini heatsinks for the other two on the top of the mobo.  Luckily I have an unmodded still under warranty 360 to play on.  Let's just hope that GTA:IV doesn't take a dump all over that one as well.

Yeah it's really frustrating. If I could isolate the problem then maybe I could fix it, but even though I've eliminated alot of things I still have no clue what the problem could be.

What do you guys think about just heat gunning the whole mobo? Maybe there is a loose connection somewhere I can get to resolder itself...
