If you have a slim, you only need to dremmel if you are going to flash the drive. If you just want to dump the drive to get the key for your X360Key, then you can get that without dremmeling (presuming you have a drive that can be currently dumped). However, this will only allow you to play games through the X360key and not through backup discs (not a big deal presumably).

Personal opinion is that if you have no intention of playing on Live, then go with an RGH hack instead of xkey etc. It will allow you to use a USB drive like the X360Key, but allow you to do so much more as well.

The older slims can be dumped without dremelling. The newer ones cannot be dumped at all. It does not matter if the latest update has been done or not. For the money that you would spend on the Xkey, you could pay someone to RGH your xbox for you. Lots for sale already RGH'd on the forums here (just make sure you get a trusted trader).

It is very difficult to find units in stores that can be dumped now. Personally, I would save yourself the headache and just buy one that is already RGH'd. RGH'ing is not the simpliest of tasks and your risk destroying your xbox if you mess it up....
