Laser Height Adjustment On Dg-16d2s
« on: November 23, 2012, 08:42:00 AM »

So, after months of research I finally found out the cause of the open tray error for my drive - laser height is incorrect. Does anybody know a quick and easy way to set the right height?

the height adjustments are very difficult.
i spent about 8 hours working on one.
ended up tightening all the way down and doing 1/4 turns on all until i finally got a read then adjusted 1/8 turns until it seemed to read all disks.

not fun at all.
i did mine on a 16d4s which i had to remove the logic board each time i needed to adjust.

future i would just use the drive for parts and buy a new drive without a laser or logic board and just replace those.  way faster.

I second what smuddge37 said.  Once they are tampered with, your best bet is to buy a replacement drive.   I would rather do a full RGH and dual nand setup than try to level the laser.

99% of the time the internals are marked with a marker as to the correct positions of the adjustable parts shouldnt take that long to do ive done hundreds in 5 mins tops.

any time you replace the laser you mess up the alignment.

its not the height either you are adjusting, its the perpendicularity of the laser to the disc surface. if it isnt perfectly parrallel it wont read.

@Gazc0igne, you must be lucky then.  Hundreds of laser replacements and never seen a marker showing correct adjustments for those 4 screws.
I have also only ever had 1 in the hundreds that I have replaced where someone actually touched those.   I hope I never do again!

Ive done quite a few now and also never seen any marks, i prefer to replace the whole drive now for customers as the diff is not worth bothering with. But i leave that up to the customer.

I took a look at a drive after reading Gazc0igne's post and found some marks that might suggest the original position.  Take a look at the drive with the back side of the laser exposed.  Look closely to the where the rails go into metal frame.  The marking look very crude and I haven't adjusted based on the marking yet but I will report back later when I get time to test.
