I have had to build a probe.
it isnt difficult at all. basically its a resistor coming from the dvd power cable. "plenty of tuts for that" some people just use an l.e.d. but i find resistors easier as for 1 thing i have hundreds of the things. and you dont have to worry about the polarity of it..

when it comes to power cycle. you really do need atleast a switch on the power line but i find it easier with a ck3 lite (or whatever the equivalent is now)

for some reason you sometimes have to popwer cycle the drive 3-4 times before it works. and if your yanking the power out of the dvd whilst trying to probe at the same time that makes it almost impossible..
So atleast a switch on the 3.3 is recomended.

you do want to use a resister in your probe if your making one though (or led) but like i said there are LOTS of tutorials out there for that.

you don't need a resistor, straight ground will work, but results seem better by adding a needle.  you can also just use an old xtractor probe for the 74850's unmodified, but u still need the #6 switch.
