Slim Liteon Open Tray Problems, Maybe Fixed
« on: November 15, 2011, 07:38:00 AM »

My brother's slim has been making like grinding noise when the drive is reading disc previous to flashing.

I did the kamikaze method on it.  We tested it out with a backup of Skyrim and installed it to the hard drive.

He then played it and a few minutes in his XBOX froze and he turned it off.  Restarted it and the drive now says open tray.  So were like WTF it just worked a minute ago.  I noticed that once I put a disc in, the drive would only spin for a split second then stop.  I was worried that perhaps I messed up something.

So I took the drive out and put a disc in it with my CK3 attached and noticed the disc wouldn't spin up like it should.  I opened the drive and noticed the laser was stuck in the back.  I moved the laser forward and put the drive back together, put a game in it and it was spinning again.

So we test out a retail MW3 and it, it works.  Go to dashboard and install game.  About 25% if fails saying disc is dirty and should be cleaned.  So I took the disc out to check it and put it back in.  It then fails again and then goes back to saying open tray.

Take the drive apart again and the laser is stuck in the back again!  So I was thinking what is going on with this thing.  I moved the laser back and forth from the middle of the drive to the back several times and I noticed when the laser was in the back of the drive there seemed to be more tension there and would require more energy to move the laser from the back.  I then looked and seen that there are 3 screws holding down the rails that the laser moves on.  You have to remove the PCB to be able to adjust them all.  I noticed one was not screwed in as far in comparison to the other 2.  I tightened them all to try to be equally screwed in, figured that would make it more level.  I thought that maybe the level was off and perhaps that is why it is making grinding noises because the laser is stuck.

So here's the results I have got so far:
1)  Drive quit making as many grinding noises when reading discs like it was before. When we tried installing MW3 at first it was making a bunch of grinding noises and after the rail adjustment, only once when installing did it make that noise.
2)  My brother played games all night without problem once I had adjusted the rails.  Want to see how this pans out over the week if he can play games still without the laser getting stuck again, taking apart the slim is annoying.

I would like to see if my brother gets the problem again, but I think adjusting the rails might be the problem with people who just get open tray and their laser is getting stuck or unable to move properly because its not level.

Any comments or suggestions please post them.  I don't think this had anything to do with the kamikaze method.  The drive was a 9504 flashed to 0272 by dash update.  So please if you have any better suggestions on things to do to prevent the laser from getting stuck in the back of the drive let me know.

Figured I would post this since some people who have open tray and don't think it is related to a bad kamikaze might have overlooked this.

Certainly an interesting find, Bong. I'm going to have a look at a drive I thought had been bricked too. Thanks for the info!

it's definetely a kamikaze problem , change the pcb board and trust me everything will be a go

Well its been working ever since I tightened the rails, no weird noises anymore either.  My brother has been putting 12+ hour skyrim days too hahaha

The drive had preexisting problems anyway.  Wouldn't play some original games sometimes.  Guess I should try those in there now and see if it works.
