Ihas224-06 Fw Upgrade Needed Before Burner Max?
« on: October 22, 2011, 08:54:00 AM »

Sorry if this is the incorrect forums, but i have a simple question. It seems like people are all trying to upgrade the fw on these iHAS drives to the latest revision? is that correct? I thought we are just to wait for the burner max fw to come out and flash that?  As far as the latest revision i see there are these below?

GL0A
http://www.firmwareh...24+B/files.html

GL08
http://codeguys.rpc1.../firmwares.html

Then i read somewhere how it changes your versions like the 224 -> 424 or something like that? The tutorial shows AL1A only because its for the 324 model.

Burner Max appears to be a kind of modified version of whatever is the latest firmware version for the drive, or at least, it's tailor-made for each particular drive. The guide that's floating around does imply you need to update to the latest official firmware version first, although I don't fully understand why that's necessary when the Burner Max firmware is replacing the official firmware, but I've installed the latest official firmware on my drive anyway.

If you want to be sure of getting the latest version for your drive, install Lite-On's SmartPack utility that's available from their site as it will search for the latest firmware update for your drive and install it for you. I believe GL0A is the latest for your drive though, so you could use the exe file from Firmware HQ.
The 124, 324 and 524 drives are all the same in terms of hardware. So are the 224, 424 and 624 drives. That means that you can convert a 124/324 to a 524 or a 224/424 to a 624 if you care about the extra features such as Smart Erase or LabelTag. There is a small risk of bricking your drive when doing that, mostly if you don't follow the instructions correctly, and it's really only worth doing if you're actually going to use the extra features that you can unlock, cos if you only want to burn discs and nothing more you can just leave your drive as it is, update the official firmware, then flash with Burner Max when it's available.

I have no plans on using label tag or smart erase on a ihas 124b, so i guess there is no point in crossflashing and taking any risks, im assuming the drive will still burn the same and the same writing strategies will be just the same ?
