I have been burning on a Pioneer 112D since 2007. I have done a bunch of Verbatims and still not a hitch. I had some cheapos when living in Korea because I did not think there was much difference. There was. Also, I noticed a degradation of media in some of the older stuff I was using. Games I played before now suddenly seize up or I get graphic errors. Verbatims for whatever reason don't.

Would burning data tighter to increase capacity be possible via firmware alone?  That is, more pits per linear unit.  Somewhat like how the old dreamcast games were pressed.

I have 10 dual layer burners in my house. 7 inside machines and 3 collecting dust on a shelve. Several different brands.

I really hope that I will be able to use at least one of these but I'm not holding my breath considering they all are  2+ years old.

sure hope it is in fact lite on ihas they are great burners i have used a 222 ide with great results til it eventually needed replacement, went with sata 422 works awesome i burn many discs for many different drives and rarely get a coaster. in fact just ordered 2 more 422s a few days ago unfortunately they are ide (no more sata ports!) so they will not burn xgd3 but they will do xgd2 just fine and i can continue to use my sata 422 for xgd3. just thought id share my results i see some ppl say whats best or whatever, i can only say these drives work awesome. btw thanks c4eva

Give it a few days and there will be no drives available from retailers.  They will be on Ebay and other sites for close to double the price.  That really bothers me. mad.gif  C4E should only release it one or two drives at a time to prevent this type of price gouging.

If C4Eva released it for just 1 drive now, the price of that unique writer would sky rocket and the device would be sold out in no time. When he releases it then for the next type, that price will skyrocket again, etc.
However when he releases it on 6 different drives at once, those drives are not that unique (you can choose amongst 5 other versions) and the price won't go as high.

I'm thinking it will probably be ported to other drives anyway once the first drive firmware has been released, especially since models are discontinued frequently and it's in Xecuter's interest for this to be as accessible as possible.

I find Memorex and Windata and all other media to be garbage.  They get some light scratches and they don't work.  Verbatim is by far a more superior disc and will even play when scratched to a certain extent.  I also find it common to see that people who use memorex and cheap media discs often end up having dead lasers.  Also Verbatims will work on every drive type made, some drive types are more picky about certain discs and only will play verbatims.

The rule of life that states "You get what you pay for" is in fact true in this case.

I used to use memorex before too, and then killed my liteon laser. When that xbox got banned in 2009, i got another one, which was a sammy. I still believe verbatim isnt worth the money at all. I use Optical Quantum, I buy them from newegg. Really cheap and work great. I have some backups, that are really messed up from being thrown around. And when i go to play, my Samsung reads them like nothing. I recommend you try it out. They are not like alone, or memorex, or TDK. These to me, are worth the $30-$40 for a pack of 50. I gotten 1 coaster once, And that was my fault. I didn't use the .dvd file, cause i didn't have it.(I renamed the rip, so i forgot, to make a new dvd file) BTW i burn using my Sony Optiarc DVD burner. These are really good, in my opinion. My laser hasn't given me problems, and i can play for hours, and i never get reading error. The laser is the original one also. When i got the Xbox it was never opened.

optiarcs are made by nec and rebadged by sony.  they do write a greater number of dual layer discs better than liteons but many drives burn verbatims well anyway.

theres not that many new dual layer dvd writers being released,  havent seen any new models for a while.

 I have two Sony Optiarc DVD burners from May 2010, And they work great. And yes the are Re-branded, NEC drives. I burned many different brands, and i barely ever get coasters, with any brand, From Memorex, TDk to verbatim, Pretty much any brand i throw at them  works perfect.

TX if you ever get a chance to read this, I think you should get in touch with C4 and see if he can develop a firmware that would start burning 1:1 copies of the software. I mean playable on a legit unmodded box.

C4 definitely knows his $&*! on the dvd firmware side. I'm surprised TX hasn't just released a drive for like 500$ that burned 1:1 copies of xbox/ps2 etc.

The reason all of our drives can't do it now is not hadware limitations, its software limitations, they all abide by the colored book standards. Seeing that C4 knows how how to manipulate these drives in such a way to make them bend to his will, I definitely see MS crying foul when C4 says Introduce the Do-it-all drive. No more mods, no more hassles. Backup and burn bit-to-bit blind copies of anything. Throw in a dvd with aacs, get a dvd with aacs, throw in a ps2 disc, get a ps2 disc. Throw in a disc with some funkified copy protection, get a disc with funkified copy protection.

If that was in any way possible then don't you think that it would have been done already?

I think the drives are

iHAS124 = basic model
iHAS224 = 124 + LightScribe
iHAS324 = 124 + SmartErase
iHAS424 = 124 + LightScribe + SmartErase (or= 224 + SmartErase)
iHAS524 = 124 + LabelTag + SmartErase
iHAS624 = 124 + LabelTag + LightScribe + SmartErase (or = 524 + LightScribe)

These models are almost the same, cross flashable (additional functions are managed by hardware, only flashing won't add them)
Besides these models are based on MediaTek MT1879E(124-324),  MT1879LE(424-624) chipsets

They are rebadged often as Plextor PX-880SA, Asus DRW-24B1ST, Asus DRW-24B1LT or TEAC W524GS and Sony Optiarc AD-724xS.
Plenty of choice I suppose. Only 2 chipsets, only 1 firmware needed for all

At this point, I have to say that I am inclined to agree with you but all anybody can do at the moment is speculate unfortunately.

That the compatibility number has gone up from 4 to 6 overnight though is kind of intriguing.
