Yeah, since Hitachis are not flashed (not to say they won't eventually be), I'm starting to wonder if this firmware update has nothing to do with XGD3 support. The pieces just don't seem to fit together.

Whats the thinking then guys???
M.s are just going all out to stop backup games working legit or not???

. I guess within a few weeks when retail games should be shipping with XGD3 format we will know more.

what makes you think the new format will automatically be in stores in a few weeks?
now assuming the disc space issue has been a complaint for some time now then we can assume that MS has already lent the developers the new format months ago to start building their games on.
OR we could assume that since the beta test went well that MS has just NOW began to send developers the new disc format to put their games on thus pushing back any official store releases to at least the end of 2011 and maybe the start of 2012.
most games to be released in the next couple months are already pretty much finished probably, they're just awaiting mass production in some stamping facility somewhere.

MS are in the long process of dipping their toes in and testing the water for the forthcoming next Generation of console`s arrival around  the autum  of 2012  ...This is what I imagine all these  recent changes are to do with. Maybe wrong .....but I can see the light .............. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

the future of gaming will not be on a disc you can buy in the store but rather just a simple downloaded format.
100% digital no lasers, no discs.  if it must be distributed you can purchase your copy on a memory card but it can only be transfered from the memory card to a console and is immediately wiped clean.  each game is digitally signed to your name so everything has a purchase history... no purchase history = you stole it = knock on the door from police  biggrin.gif

I don't believe that's going to happen for a very, very long time. Or at least until ISPs stop using bandwidth caps (I know people in Oceania who have 5GiB caps per month) and reliable storage reaches dozens of terabytes. Even the second will require games to stay relatively small, and I don't think that's going to happen soon.

As for the update: I'm thinking it's more about flashing all the drives in the universe rather than supporting a new disc format. We already know that the beta discs work on stock 360s without any update. What matters now is what the update change in the firmware (or if it was simply to cause trouble for everyone). We likely won't know for some time.

I agree the future will likely steer towards digital storage vs. disc. The method you describe here would not allow use for rental or taking to a friends house. This would never work. Any type of history could in turn be faked anyhow. I mean hell One person buys 6 terabytes worth of game data using fake user information, clones the entire library history and all, puts it on bittorent sites... then what? I would wrather be able to use images from digital storage though, much more convieniant.

This is a really big step forward in the piracy Battle I feel Because it`s going to deter maybe 75 to 80% of the so called backup user’s, who don`t own the original (but swear they do  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif) ) as they will need to adopt a new stance  eg: learn to do it themselves............ (IMG:style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif)   so they will eventually be bled out on each and every future update.     Really Bewilders  me Why MS took so long to work this out...I would expect them to start incorporating the FW update on Random disk or game Update also which would be a spanner in the works for all unsuspecting peeps and Kill the majority of piracy in stages also.

Initially the modders will be feeling the full benefits of the latest MS Tactics. But has time pass`s and update become more frequent they will find demand will start to Dry up also

Because they needed the AP2.5 etc capable drives to dominate there systems market space?

If Hitachis don't support XGD3 then I doubt MS will use XGD3, not without recalling all Hitachi-equipped 360s.  If they say "we put a different drive in your 360 so you'll have to go buy a new one to play these games, even though your friend has an older 360 and theirs works fine" people will kick off, and rightly so.

I think this is not likely given Microsoft's past policy regarding updates. Most updates are released on Xbox LIVE, then follow on game discs down the road. This very likely has to do with SDK updates as well as keeping control of various bugs which might appear in the dashboards.

@ddsdavey: Microsoft has put too much into the 360's security and Kinect to drop it all at this point. I expect this gen to last at least 2 more full years before the next consoles from Sony and Microsoft are released. Perhaps an announcement at E3 next year, then a release the following fall. If that doesn't happen, I think there won't be new consoles till around 2015. Sony's a bit of a wildcard due to the exploitation of the PS3, but I don't expect their release cycle will be much different from Microsoft's.

@The_Doctor: No, Microsoft is not offering new 360s to people with Hitachis. I think this is more about flashing all DVD-ROMs rather than format support.

i think thats partly his point, it was either use mods and stay offline, or dont use mods and go on live
afaik, even with dual boots, it was like that.
i think they probably wont support xgd3. im no expert, but i believe the reason they are ignored is because they're either too risky to flash, or the xbox just doesnt support flashing them. remember, they arent flashed the same way as the other drives. (arent ms offering slim's for people with hitaci drives?)

OK, let me explain this to you, i phoned m$ and asked if the last update allows me to play the new format disc like MajorNelson web said, on my OLD HITACHI 2006/7 XBOX360... and they answered "YES!"
I asked they if they are sure that i dont need to send my XBOX to get replaced for a new one or somthing like that and they answered "NO, YOU JUST NEED TO ACCEPT AND APPLY THE LAST SYSTEM UPDATE" plus... they said "THE LAST SYSTEM UPDATE WORKS ON ALL MODELS AND ALL VERSION OF ALL YEARS OF XBOX 360 AND IT ALLOW THOSE CONSOLES TO BE COMPATIBLE WITH NEW DISC FORMAT UPCOMMING"
They said me that "THE REPLACE PROGRAM HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS LAST UPDATE OR HITACHI DRIVES"

Then for me is PERFECTLY CLEAR that hitachi drives dont gonna need a new CFW to read XGD3 or accept the last update.

For some strange reason those drives boots XGD3 without need to be reflashed.

Elcappo: do you have a beta-disc of Halo to try it?
Because i'm not very convinced about answers of ppl from callcenters tongue.gif

I've seen no reports of ppl having that beta-disc booted on hitachi drives

Greetings ! I have a question.

I recently spoofed my old Hitachi (I think a 47) as my malfunctioning Samsung M28 and flashed with LT 1.1+.

Will the update revert the drive back to the Hitachi (the drive's) original or the Samsung (the console's) original ?

And when I'm going to flash the drive again, do I need to re-spoof it or just flash it with the (Hitachi I presume) firmware ?

Sorry, I'm a bit confused (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) flashing, I get. Spoofing + updates, I still have some more road to travel. :/

(ack! just my luck, hitachi does not have 1.9 >.<)

since a spoofed drive reportedly fails to completely update due to incompatible fw flash during update you should just write back stock fw for the actual drive, accept the update, then leave it at that until a new safe cfw for your drive is released.
spoofing has never been proven "safe" for live anyway, so either way you're potentially looking for a ban somewhere "along the road"

So I should remount my samsung, flash it to original FW (can I -legaly- find that somewhere if I have the DVD key but not kept a backup of the samsung ofw ?) or can I just reflash the hitachi to its ofw ? (won't that stop it from working on my console due to it beeing a spoofed drive ?)

so to recap :
1) remount samsung, flash ofw
2) accept update
3) flash cfw on samsung, test if the poc works
4) flash cfw on hitachi as a last resort and pray

I just wanna buy some rock band dlc sad.gif
