Benq Drive - Bricked?
« on: April 22, 2011, 01:44:00 PM »

Hi everyone.

Sorry, this is my first post, and I did look at the newbie post guidelines, however I think as my question is more technical based it is ok to post in this section - if not please correct me and I will delete it!

Basically; I purchased a second hand xbox 360 (to go alongside my un-touched "live" box) with the intention of flashing the drive and experimenting with backups etc; I was aware that the DVD drive was not opening, however was assured that this was an easy fix (ha!): I had done some reading up online and already knew a little about the flashing procedure etc.

When the box arrived I powered it up and immediately noticed two things: 1) the centre led of the ROL (the one that flashes when you are ejecting CD's) is flashing constantly and 2) the DVD drive does not respond whatsoever; when you try and open and close the tray via the dashboard - nothing works (possible power cable needing replaced?). Having looked online this would appear to be a potential sign of a "bricked" drive due to a bad flash, so I could be in trouble.

EDIT:: How embarrassing! It's a BenQ VAD 6038 drive (Thanks syntaxerror 329...I knew I missed something important!)

Unfortunately the box has been updated past the J-Tag threshold and as such I cant recover the drive key this way. I have tried using my onboard mobo SATA to read the drive but it isn't found in the BIOS (let alone windows!).

I have ordered a VIA chipset SATA to try again, however wonder if i'm beating a dead horse. Is it likely that this box has been a bad flash in the past and is beyond repair?

Many thanks for any suggestions,

SGDW.

First of all - thanks for the replies (sorry I didnt mention drive name in original post...dumb attack!)

I'm hoping my via chipset will arrive tomorrow and I can give it another shot...my only concern is that the drive isn't receiving power so I might struggle to read the FW.

Certainly if I can then I will be pretty chuffed...the other alternative is to buy a BenQ drive...swap the chipset...and then HOPE that I can read the FW....seems like a long way for a shortcut though!
