Just cos the old hitachis were a pile of crap doesn't mean this one will be, they've had a few years now to design something better and m$ is touting the slim as having a quiet drive.

I second that. Why does everyone think they would be just as bad? Maybe they will be a lot better even then LiteOn's. We'll just wait and see.

If i remember correctly the last hitachi security had alot of peeps stumped for awhile and then the website unlock scam came along then finally a 79 unlock cd was released to make it easier.  They have had a long time as stated by some of you to perfect not only the quality but the security so id say it would be as silent as a lite-on and maybe even harder to hack. I am thinking M$ are trying to put as many new drives out as possible to make it harder and take longer to bypass each and every new security measure these drives contain and they all probably have entirely new code from scratch in the FW and the drive keys will be in new locations on each 1 aswell. They know eventually it will be done but they want it to take as long as possible. Maybe we will start to get some version in slim from Toshiba-Samsung next.

Thats probably true, phi-lion probably wasnt keeping up with the demand for xmas and stuff so yea, they but hitachi drives were painfull to flash and to play with, from fucking noises to random unknown issues while detecting the drive on the pc so yea, fuck hitachis.

I just compared images of the slim Lite-on tray with the new Hitachi tray. They are completely different. the Lite-ons are a full semi-circle, and the Hitachi has a jagged edge on one side. So at least it will be easy to spot if you have one, without having to take console apart.

awww man....these drives again. I am going to have to respectfully disagree with folks saying they will have improved them etc... they will likely be the same exact drives in a new shell to fit in the slim, MS doesn't exactly have a good track record with this hardware , they went as cheap as they could and nothing is going to change that.  With the fact that you can install games to the HDD now this shouldn't be that big of a deal, the disc will not be constantly spinning unless you are playing direct from the disc.

What the previous drives was like doesn't mean anything.

Hitachi have made some good drives for the PC, do you think they say "oh, this is for xbox? we better make it crap"

Everyone makes bad stuff at some point, from trusted brands having a HDD product line die constantly to Toyota making cars with brakes that dont work, these things happen.

Well.... Im by no means any electronics specialist or anything.... it may mean nothing it may mean something but looking at the pics it seems certain points on the PCB are clearly marked unlike any of the boards Ive seen in past 360s (3.3v, 5v, eject, etc) could be an oversight on Hitachis part so maybe this will be a bit easier.... I guess we'll just have to wait and see. Just my 2 cents.

I'm suprised M$ hasn't managed to convince drive manufacturers to standardise the outward look of the drive tray, because just doing that will stop people ejecting the tray and easily deciding which is the easiest to work with, i can guarantee that would slightly reduce piracy, but hey i don't wanna be putting ideas in their head.

Painful? They were a doddle.Yes they could brick with no return apart from stripping the chip and dumping via programmer.
