I have been using a Hitachi drive for over a year and half to play my games online, then it just quit reading over the weekend, it just says open tray. Any ideas? The laser seems to be outputting, but that is no guarantee it is going back into the laser housing to be processed.  I would like to keep using the drive, since it seems to be "ban proof" and commences to knock on wood.

It seems the cd recognition is fine so that leaves me with the dvd recognition. I believe the laser can't output a fine  enough beam for it to recognize the dvds or games.

Sounds like it needs the potentiometer that drives the laser tweaked, I suggest looking up tutorials on this. It may be strong enough to read CDs but too weak to read DVDs. This has happened to two of my xbox. I had to replace the laser in one but only tweak the voltage on the other and it works fine.
