Is there anyway to firmware this drive without mod chips?

I have two xboxes and took apart the one to just use offline and play backups on, but it has the 74850c drive in it and im told the only way to firmware it, is to buy a $50 mod chip? Don't really wanna spend that much to mod one drive. I was hoping I could just plug it into my PC, dump the original firmware and flash the modded one.

Unfortunately for you you've got a stock v7 so you'll need SOME form of hardware but that's where you have a choice of how much to spend.

I made my own probe (3 posts down) which cost practically nothing to make and also use an old Xbox to power.

Alternatively you can go down the commercial CK3 w/probe route which will cost you about $40/$50 (complete guesswork here).  For a one off I'd go down the homemade route but it all depends on how confident you are with a soldering iron etc.

Also for the OP, since you are new to this it seems, follow his advice quoted and also be careful you do not plug in your drive power cable upside down.  You can check its plugged in right because there are notches on the sides and top of the cable that fit nicely into the plug.  Make sure you plug it back in right before you turn on the xbox or bad things will happen.  I know its common sense thing that people should probably know, but you'd be surprised how often this happens.

If you know how to solder you can dump and flash the drive for $2 all you need is a resistor and a switch. (technically you don't even need the switch but i recommend it)

Definitely above. I think many people forget that the MRA hack works with ALL Lite-On drive Xbox 360's except for the newest Slim edition. That means if you're good with a soldering iron you can simply dump it with trace cuts rather than probes etc. However, if you were like me and were lucky enough to get an 8 series version 1, then you can just do a SATA dump (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

Boxddr method is easier than making a probe....I just use my probe cos it's there.
