Mostly to detect PC viruses so you don't pass them along the other PC's. The only major Mac virus I know of requires the user to manually install the virus them selves. The virus is disguised as a video codec for a porn website. Other than that, Mac are free of viruses until Macs gain enough popularity to be worthy of virus infestation like Windows is. I've even seen a bank that still uses Windows NT 4.
