After having my xbox for a couple months and not doing anything with it, I went out and got some 22 ohm resistors from radioshack. I used the boxxdr method, cut my traces, soldered the wires and resistor to a switch, got it all connected. When I put it in the xbox the first time, I got three red lights in the ring. Reconnected, it connected fine. I tried ejecting the cd drive, didn't work.

So, I disconnected the sata cord and connected it to my PC. Opened it in Jungle (I have PortIO installed), but I can't find it.

My question is, is my CD tray not opening normal for BOXXDR method? After I soldered everything, the CD drive will no longer open, and it keeps saying "OPENING" on my screen, when I press a button on OPENING it goes to CLOSING then back to OPENING again.

I may have also accidentally put the DVD power in incorrectly, I don't think it shorted, but if it did would there be any tells for it not to work? (Maybe RROD?) Since I am not getting RROD with power connected to the DVD and sata connected to PC, am I ok?

LOL! looks like you shorted to ground at every solder point. Buy a new drive. Hopefully you were able to get your keys.

Clean it and star all over again.
You can try probe methot less soldering.

probably better off buying a new drive. next time cover where solder isnt supposed to go with masking tape. use low watt iron. 15watts with smallest tip you can find on radioshack(they usually always carry the small one). less is more. use as little solder as possible. hold the wire with tape, heat the wire by touching it with iron THEN touch the iron with solder. thats the clear instruction on the soldering iron package. I am surprised so many people cant do the simple thing.

good luck. could try desoldering pump on this board if you dont have the key. then start over.

Two different messages... is the drive gone or not? If I can fix it without going out and exchange it to walmart with their 1 year warranty, I think that would be the best bet.

That was my second attempt (after the dvd drive wouldnt open the first time, I decided to repair all the traces and connect it back only to get rrod), and it looks alot worse then it is. I don't think its shorted at those points because I used quite a bit of solder, because my iron is an old piece of crap, and the solder is extruded outward. Not only that, but I still have that green pcb finish ontop of everything except that strip where the solder is (not sure if current can pass it, but doubtful).

Could those shorted points explain my problem of opening the dvd drive.

Use multimeter and measure 3,3V line --> GND. (All info is in XBH)

Fix pad/pin 122...

Doesn't seem recoverable, drive won't open or its not recognized by my computer...

I got a new soldering iron and a multimeter last night so I will give it a shot again.
