2 Liteon 74850c Drives With Same Problem..
« on: February 02, 2010, 03:35:00 PM »

Has anyone seen this issue with any 74850C drives or any other Liteon drives??

Both have been flashed with LT both with calibration data and without it..

Both will initially play backups with no problems, but then about 15-20 minutes after playing, both will start crapping out with unreadable disc errors.

Turn off the consoles for a while and plug them back in and they'll start playing game discs just fine and then over time start crapping out..

I'm suspecting the lasers are going out.. Neither one did I unplug the laser while flashing.. It wasn't something I was aware of until I came across some other threads about the manner..

Just wanted to see if anyone else has seen this behavior..

Oh and I've tweaked on the Cal. Pots as well on both drives.. with no benefits...

If it's indeed a laser issue, I'll order a couple of laser units to fix these 2 Liteons and put them in other machines that have Hitachi or Samsung drives..

Its one of two things...

Laser... thats most likely whats wrong with them.

or

Bad media... could be depends on what brand your using and how you are burning them example..speed?

First of course check the media if that dont work then go buy two new lasers and you will be fine. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

I use nothing but Verbatim DVD+R DL. The media works on all my other consoles, so I'm going to suspect it's the lasers..

Definitely the laser. No question.

I cant count the number of consoles if flashed and I NEVER thought this laser issue would happen to me. It didnt make any sense (and still doesnt) and I always figured it was other peoples hardware causing the issue.

Anyway, it happened to me last night for no reason at all. It happened to the only drive I have ever replaced a laser on as well (which is weird).

Maybe do a pot tweak on the laser and it will be better.

I think the very important question is:
Is this problem (that written here) related with LT fw or NOT???

and update to this..

I just got a new laser unit for one of the Liteon 74850C drives and installed it.. No change whatsoever with the performance. It will play several games for about 10 minutes and then it will start giving unreadable disc errors.

I decided to downgrade to 1.6 non-stealth for this drive that I just put a new laser in.. interesting after 30 mins of playing the same game backup titles, I've not gotten any unreadable disc errors..

could it be that LT is not very good with the 74850C drives??

I've already did the cal pot tweak on the old laser while running LT and it didn't help..

*update*

I put the old laser back in and ran with 1.6 non-stealth... no problems at all with unreadable disc errors..

I'm starting to wonder if LT is having problems with the 74850C drives???

Remove the drive bottom cover and make sure both heat sink pads are installed. They conduct heat from two very important chip into the cover of the drive.

One should be on chip U501 (near the soldered wire pads with the 2 yellow 2 white, red and black wire)

The other is on the Mosfet U7 (right above the r707 point we probe on the 7xxxx series LO drives)

If those are missing you will experince the problems you are describing.

Hmmm, interseting. I have saved another user in the past that was just missing the pads. Was hoping that was all that was wrong here. I have not done too many LT hacks yet but all the ones i have done are happy so far.
