What Would Cause This? (burnt Liteon 93450c Drive)
« on: January 26, 2010, 07:31:00 PM »

Hello everyone, just wanting to get peoples opinions on this.

We modded a 93450c drive for a customer, everything tested out fine, shipped it back.

We then get an e-mail from the customer saying he plugged it in, it started smoking and that we needed to fix this asap for him. He said it was burned on the R707 spot (which Liteon 74350c drives use, not 93450c)

So obviously the customer opened it up and tampered with it if he knew about the R707 spot, etc.

We received it back, and this is what we found (pictures below) .  It seems he was playing around with it, maybe to see the work we did, and he plugged the power cable in backwards by accident?

Don't believe we should be compensating him for this out of our own pocket but I just wanted to get others opinions on this:

I don't think plugging in backwards would do that, that's pretty bad. You should probably just take care of it or have the customer go half with you on a new drive.

Yep, was thinking to replace it ifor him just to save the hassles in the end.  I even took a working 360 and plugged the power cable in backwards to replicate the issue and that even didn't happen.  Strange.

Your solder repair on the track close to the sticker, see blue mark on sticker looks oddly close to the ground, i would expect if it was your fault it would happen there and not at the R707 point, also looks to me like he tried to read his fw with a probe and slipped.  Side note is cant really check your ground point since thats obviously burnt up, any short there might be the cause but i veer on side of the end-user but for your companys sake might have to bite this one.

This is 100% caused by upside down power, I have 10 of them here like that. It is true that sometimes you can plug them in upside and they don't burn up, in that case the MT chip cooked before the traces did.

I can also confirm that it's because of upside down power cord being plugged in.

I had a customer pull this same shit on me once....

Definately an upside down power wire on his part.
He tried pulling the same thing, demanding a refund or replacement.  He sent it back and I seen that, I knew what it was because I once did the same thing a while back.

In my opinion though, just do what you said, replace it without the hassle.  In the end, it'll cost you nothing but your time, as I would imagine the price he paid for the mod would cover the cost of the drive...

The Customer Opened the Console.  In that case the warranty should be void.
If I were modcentral I wouldn't warranty any part of that.
Make him pay for shipping there and back and make him pay for a new
drive.  The point of ordering a modded console means the customer
didn't have the experience to mod a system himself.
Why would the customer open the console to begin with?
Im sure modcentral fully tested the console before shipping.

Funny thing is, I looked at his order history and he ordered a Maximus 360 Xtractor and a USB Xtractor before.

Anyway, spent some time arguing with the customer on Live chat. Not worth my time so will replace it at my cost with him paying for shipping.

Oh well, its part of business.   (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

sylvester
you could also start using warranty void stickers if removed on the drives casing after you have modded them.
this is something we do with all drives.

it definately is not part of mine,i bought cheapo warranty stickers and if i sell a secondhand drive i slap one on.i dont use them on the customers drives,i hack them and post them back and if they have probs its their tough luck.all drives are tested for eject function as you cant check it to see if it boots games if it has their key in and no console to go with.

some people are just soft touchs.

I agree it's apart of the business, it sucks but you gotta take care of your customer otherwise they'll probably go out and tell 10 other people your business sucks and that you ruined his drive. Probably post on x-s fourms as well bashing your business. It's just not worth the trouble, just take care of it I suppose, it's not like he did it on purpose I'm sure. It sucks he won't own up to it though.

This looks a little like my drive. And yes it is as it was suspected: this happens if you plug in the power cable upside down.

After about 15 successful flashs I did it for the first time, I plugged it in the wrong way. I tell you what happend to mine and how I fixed it:

Look at this picture: http://xbox-experts.com/pics/liteonalt1.jpg
You you can see a 0 ohm resistor (aka bridge) named R207 on the lower right side of the picture. This resistor connects the a few data lines with the backside through the two holes at the C01 above the resistor.
If you plug in the power cable upside down you put current on this data lines which results in burning the line between R207 and the two holes. It stinks and renders the drive unusable, it even is no longer able to open the tray.

The burns in your picture are much larger and it will be in no way fixable as it was connected much longer than my drive. The burns are beneath the place where mine is but the data line I mentioned starts at this place.

I could fix my drive temporarily. I removed the isolation of a thin wire and tinned it. I drilled a hole through the lower of the two holes and put the wire through it. Then I soldered one side to the left side of R207 and the other side to the back of the circuit board where the hole did go before the burn.

I was able to open the drive again and to read the key. I now need to buy a new drive. I learned my lesson since it nearly cost me a brand new elite 360. And I really want to warn you: It looks like you can't put this cable upside down, but it is much easier done than you think. Even electrical engineers like me make mistakes like that if they hesitate.

Been there done that! i did this once to one of my 360"s by accident and it did the same identical thing as the pic above! The customer must of took it apart for whatever reason and then plugged it in backwards. i would for your buisness sake just replace it and tell him to shove it up is ass since you know for a fact he did it to himself lol (just kidding about the shove up the arse part).
