Making A Molex Adaptor
« on: January 21, 2010, 11:06:00 AM »

Hey guys,

This may be in the wrong section, mods move if needed.

But I have just bought a new Sammy drive to hook up to my PC with the 0800 FW and rip games with.

 I am just wondering if it would be possible to create some sort of adaptor that changes the big molex plugs (that norm go into PC DVD drives) into one of the smaller 360 drive ones, WITHOUT (being the main point) having to buy a CK3 or any other connectivity kit.

Thanks

Sure is, I've done it, there are a couple ways, this way being the easiest.

If you have a SATA power cable comming from the PSU, then buy a SATA Power cable extension, and use that, else, you'll either need to tap one of the orange wires comming from the PSU or get a voltage regulator to get a 3.3V lead.

A good diagram if you are using a voltage regulator, if not then just hook the 3.3V lead to either the orange cable from the PSU or the SATA Power Extension cable.

Yellow = 12V
Red = 5V
Black = Ground
Orange = 3.3V

To make a successful eject, you will need to use a SPDT switch on Pin 8 in the picture.

thanks for the reply , do you have a link to such a power extension cable ? I believe it would have to go from a SATA to the small 12pin one that goes into the 360 drives. Ive tried to search for one, but keep coming up with ones that go from a 4pin molex to a sata power connection.

Cheers

You'll have to make the cable yourself, by slicing an existing xbox dvd power cable, and the sata power extension cable.

Sata Extension cable

Xbox 360 DVD Power cable

Use this: http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=651212

Please search before asking for stuff that has been around for ages.

Also, for your samsung drive, ignore the 3.3v pin, you don't need it, and for an eject, you don't have to have the regulator, a simple on/off switch will do.

on= close tray and read
off= stop spinning and open tray.

Simple as apple pie.

I build my self on of these long time ago. Not so dificult I tell you.

And why wouldn't a SPST switch, or rather, any type of switch be sufficient? I thought the eject triggers on rising/falling edge (cant remember which).

Edit: I realize now that you want to switch between GND and 3.3V. Sorry, disregard my post

Heres a diagram I used that made it easy for me to remember the connections, This assumes you have a spare Male ended SATA Power cable, and a Xbox 360 Power Cable.
