0021 Rrod After 93xxx Firmware Flash
« on: December 31, 2009, 11:06:00 AM »

I was able to retrieve the firmware/key successfully, but when i soldered the dvd board traces back together to test the drives functionality i get this error. I am hoping that getting a new drive will fix this problem, but am seeking the sujestions from this board before my purchase. Any help is greatly appreciated.

remove the drive and repower the console on and watch the 3 red lights disappear miraculously.its your drive work causing the drive to time out, either redo it again properly or replace the drive.

And if the rrod error is still 0021 without the drive plugged in then it is just a coincedence that it happened when i flashed my drive. i say this because it  shows the rrod even when i turn the box on without the dvd drive connected. just wasnt sure that if the drive timed out then it needs to "retime itself" with a functional drive before the error will reset itself.

Take the circuit board out of the dvd drive and check for shorts from each places you soldered to ground. I think you have a short in the drive and that short has now damged the southbridge. I can install a new southbridge chip if you want. I just got a new very nice machine for BGA rework and would like to try fixing some more interesting problems. PM me if you're interested.

whats causing most of the red light errors with the drives that need the soldering is the work carried out by the person themselves ie:the soldering and the rebridging of the tracks itself.so anyone who gets this should know that they need to repair the tracks of the drive correctly till the drive and the unit function properly.

exacly what you are trying to say i do not know,if your unit happens to red light on you then its unlucky,if its red lighting cos of the work you did then correct your work.

this just happened to me to on my elite,, and I managed to fix it as well, but I got a secondary error, and one red light, and I think it had something to do with the video connection or the network chip, that's what other people are telling me...so I decided to return my xbox for a new one....I think it redlines because of what were doing with the power connection in the board, because I use a the xbox to power the drive, so I'm thinking about getting a connectivity kit...so I can avoid this red line....can anybody agree with me?...is using a connectivity kit a safer way, instead if using the xbox to power up thwe drive???
