Lite-on Firmware Contains Laser Calibration Data?
« on: December 30, 2009, 11:33:00 PM »

I read this a few weeks ago now on xbox-hacker and think it really needs to be discussed further.

Xbox Hacker Thread - See reply #36 from Geremia

Here is what Geremia had to say in case you don't feel like clicking the link
QUOTE
I would suggest to transplant also area 3C000-3CFFF, which seems to be laser calibration data and changes from drive to drive.

So could this be why people have complained about read issues after flashing their Lite-on drive?

Many people even believe that laser death can occur during flashing and now disconnect the ribbon cable going to the laser before flashing Lite-on drives. Maybe calibration data has been the issue all along?

If there is truth to this then perhaps Jungle Flasher should also move this data when using a complete Lite-on dump as a source?

i read that before i flashed my 93450c-2, and did copy it, and everything works perfectly, so whatever that area is, it hasn't done any damage. and i agree, there was a difference between the ix firmware, and the stock before i copied it.

If this is true then JF should have an option of copying the laser calibration data added just to make it easier for those that aren't handy with a hex editor.

Lite-on Firmware Contains Laser Calibration Data?
« Reply #3 on: January 08, 2010, 06:56:00 AM »

Good evening, just to add some more chit chat to this topic the same issue happened to me..

Was going to flash a friend's Liteon 7485 HW Revision: A0A2 from April 2009, with the 1.6 non-stealth firmware, dumped the key with jungleflasher, and flashed my own Liteon 7485 HW Revision A0A1 from November 2008 with my friend's key in order to test it on his console, usually i don't do this but as my desktop died and i only had a p3 500mhz around to do it and couldn't install the sata card properly by installing uniata drivers or even deleting the via drivers or it wouldn't recognize the Liteons, so has i was afraid of the so called freezing issues i attempted with mine, all went ok and drive was flashed, tested it on console and no problem booted everything fine. Therefore i went to flash my friend's drive, but as soon as i placed it on console it would take ages to read the games either originals or copies.. some would work, others wouldn't.
Strange, flashed it again and same issue, tried to flash teamjungle's latest ix1.61 and same thing, tought i bricked the drive somehow. Posted this issue on some irc channel and one guy came to help and reported this thread, also said that it would be better to remove the ribbon cable that goes to the laser on the drive before flashing, but the error was already made?! So by getting here i was addressed to that geremia's post on xbh, and if that power calibration data was overwritten and drive would not work properly, there could be a chance the laser wasn't dead at all but just with wrong pcd.. so i tought about flashing stock firmware i had dumped.. and baam it would load originals just fine, after that i flashed the teamjungle ix1.61 (also disconnected the ribbon cable) and then the test was successful, all worked.. but has i wanted to flash a firmware that wouldn't need the use of activate.iso on further waves i attempted to flash 1.6 non-stealth again and same stuff occurred games would not load by a random factor either being originals or backups. Strange stuff.. flashed ix 1.61 again and it would not work again.. Had to flash original firmware and ix 1.61 after that for it to work properly..

Dunno why this happened, mine had no problems with this, and only difference is hardware revision between drives.. Hope this helps somehow to solve this issue that seems to be happening to some people.

shame this wasnt spotted earlier..

i agree it would be a great addition to add a button to jungle flasher to copy that section of the firmware..

this is also great for the new drives..pretty useless for the older drives though..ive had  afew back after a feww weeks with open tray errors. but as its been erased and the only dump is a dummy not a full dump as is now available these drives are useless really unless there is a good average we can use..i think compariung data would be invaluable in finding out why some lasers die very quickly and that the above poster can see physical evidence of this which could be the calibration in the firmware..

I think Geremia is the man, but not only that, I think he should write the new fw and call it GT...as in Geremia's Touch. It might actually get done, and be free.

The entire reason I made this thread was to get confirmation or denial from Team Jungle as to whether or not this is true and is it valuable. I have PM’ed Oggy and asked for a comment from team jungle.
I am really annoyed that no one from the team has bothered to comment on this topic. Perhaps it’s gonna cost $42 if we want the answer from them.

I wonder if original benq firmware contains this also since they were never perfect at reading backups.

Maybe a stupid question, I'm watching Green Acres.......

I am pretty sure all benq original firmwares are basically the same. The key moves around a bit but besides that nothing special. Also i think the problems with benq not performing good on backups like GTA4 was fixed in iXtreme 1.41

Well i guess I was right to make this thread. Too bad i couldn't get team jungle to comment on it.

From JungleFlasher 0.1.70(85) Change log

Calibration data
- spoof copies calibration data if present in source
- dummy from target will place calibration data in dummy v2 at same location

all you had to do was look in the info pane on jungleflasher when flashing LT if you use a dummy bin instead of the original firmware it tells you

Genuine iXtreme Lite-Touch
Drive key @ n/a 77777777777777777777777777777777
Firmware Osig: [PLDS    DG-16D2S        7485]
Firmware is:  iXtreme LT

Spoofing Target
DVD Key copied to target
Inquiry string copied to Target
Identify string copied to Target
Serial data copied from Source to Target
No Calibration data in source

which would mean if you use original firmware it would copy the calibration data but wont on a dummy as the dummy doesnt take the calibration info from the drive.

anyone have thier origina that they can quickly run through and post the log at bottom just to confirm this?

Presumably you erased your drive f/w before the "dump whole f/w" method came out, so your calib(?) or whatever data is lost.

Don't worry about it, IMO. Not enough is known about this data to fret over.

So obviously the only way to preserve this calibration data for your own drive is to do a full dump.
How do I do this on my 74850? There's no easy way is there?
I wonder how important this data is. I'm a bit reluctant to flash LT now because obviously, if I do, my calibration data is lost forever.

The "easy" way for a full dump is to use the Xecuter LT Switch, or something similar. I didn't feel the calibration data was worth it to buy and install that since I already invested in the probe kit and was worried about cutting/soldering.

What I am hoping for is after people have dumped enough original firmwares we can determine a method to change the cablibration data in case someone is having problems reading discs. Unless LT is designed in a way that it adjusts the calibration on the fly.
